The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show that they believe in them and their ability to succeed academically and overall. I tell my students on a regular basis "I believe in you!" and "You can do this!" I find that creating this positive and encouraging learning environment is integral. My strengths as a tutor begins with…

I believe a good tutor should adequately equip the student for success in his/her academic life by not only providing him with assistance with basic concepts and skills instilling within him/her a desire to learn more and go 'beyond' what is expected; in other words, inspire the student to not only take responsibility to meet the requirements of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is guide them towards building self-esteem, confidence in themselves and ensure that when the tuition is over the student is able to recall the hours with the tutor and so be able to work through new challenging material by themselves. I believe one of the most important thing would be to build a student's confidence, teaching them to feel positive about themselves. Perhaps the student feels incapable of solving problems, despite possessing the ability. Thus, it is a tutor's duty to show students that they are capable and believe in themselves. It is also important that the…

I believe understanding the calibre of the student and providing constant motivation is something a tutor must importantly do for a student because quite often the individuality of a student gets lost in class and so the tutor needs to grab onto that individuality of the student so that they can not just progress ahead academically but also stand…

To explain things in such a way as if they aren't familiar with the concept. This way they are able to understand what they are doing and why it is done in such a way. I believe understanding the concept is the most important way to be able to apply it to questions. It also provides a good foundation to attempt higher order questions with critical…

Help them gain confidence in their own intellectual capabilites across the board, not just in a specific subject. One of my major strengths is patience. I think that the best thing to do when tutoring is allow the students free rein when answering questions, as I have often found that almost all of their learning comes from when they make mistakes. I tend to try to give them only small nudges when getting them to complete a question, and reduce the amount of my interference over preceding…

I believe the most important duty of a tutor is to get his tutee accomplish his/her goal like passing an exam or getting better at the tutored subject. Despite this which I consider the main one, the one which comes immediately after is the comprehension of the topic. This is not only the mechanical way to resolve it but it also means…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is focus on that student, listen to what they want and then create a personalised lesson just for them. The major difference between a class and a tutor is how the tutor is able to focus on the one student, and maximising this chance and truly listening to the student and helping them…

Inside HiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Ruby revised division strategies, focusing on inverse operations and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000 using the written method.

For Year 5, Ashton worked through fractions with different denominators as well as decimal addition and subtraction.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ella practised measurement conversions between kilograms and grams along with regular mental maths exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student faced confusion completing a fraction number line revision sheet, as noted: "there was some question on how to complete it," and did not seek clarification from their teacher—this hesitation delayed progress.

In Year 10 maths, another student needed repeated reminders to check working out, especially when handling area calculations for irregular shapes; missed steps led to incorrect answers that went unnoticed until review.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner avoided verbalising column values during addition tasks, which made it harder to spot mistakes and slowed development of place value understanding.

Each scenario left students less confident heading into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Hilton tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to rush through maths problems is now double-checking subtraction answers by adding back, catching mistakes before moving on.

In another session, a Year 7 student—who'd previously guessed at fraction questions—successfully simplified different types of fractions without prompting and explained the process aloud.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read out loud completed an entire reading comprehension passage with only minimal help and answered all follow-up questions independently.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Willagee Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hilton Primary School.
