I believe the most important role of a tutor is to guide and mentor students beyond simply teaching content. A tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Encouraging students to understand the fundamentals and enjoy the learning process builds long-term confidence and…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is guide that student to success, this can be achieved by listening and being attentive to the childs learning styles and needs. Patience and understanding. I believe that patience is one of the most important qualities to have as a tutor, this is because it can be very frustrating as a…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. However, this can be challenging especially when they have many knowledge gaps and feel fallen behind at school. A good tutor is able to identify and fill in those gaps, helping students realise their full potentials and gain confidence. It is also important…

I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. If something doesn't click the first time, I'm happy to explain it again in a different way.…

Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

Always know what students need and what's their priority. This means a tutor need to show respect to students. They need to know very well about the students and are wise and knowledgable enough to give good advice and make sure students love listening to the advice. I love to solve questions. To go an extra step for his students and understand what the student is going through would be the most important things a tutor could do for his students. As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

I would love to first know the student well. Then I would like to feed the knowledge step by step. I make sure that he/she enjoys the subject instead of dislikes the course. I am…

Be an example. Be relaxed, and make the student enjoy the subject without feeling like education is be all end all. Our tutor has been very encouraging and supportive and has made every effort to give us constructive performance feedback at the end of each tutoring session. We have noticed a difference in our daughter's attitude and confidence towards maths since starting her tutoring.

Inside HindmarshTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily focused on multiplying whole numbers with decimals and adding/subtracting decimal numbers up to four digits, then moved into two-digit multiplication.

For Year 8, Aiden tackled algebraic equations including power laws and distributive law, and practised simplifying expressions with like terms using textbook questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam worked through surface area and volume calculations for composite shapes, applying formulas to a mix of practice problems from recent classwork.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, incomplete homework and "a better attempt at homework questions" stood out—one tutor noted, "more initiative doing set homework" is needed.

For a Year 10 student, over-reliance on calculators in algebra meant fewer chances to strengthen mental arithmetic ("student needs to work on mental arithmetic as they rely on calculator too much").

A senior maths student struggled with test revision by only practicing familiar material, avoiding harder probability and statistics questions—this left gaps before assessments.

In primary maths, anxiety during problem-solving sometimes blocked recall under pressure, leading to missed steps even when concepts were understood.

Recent Achievements

One Hindmarsh tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess when stuck now regularly explains the exact steps she finds challenging, making it much easier to target support.

In another session, a Year 8 student who previously rushed through homework now double-checks answers and corrects mistakes before moving on—something he rarely did last term.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student named Natalia has started breaking down tricky worded maths problems by herself, confidently choosing which operation to use and solving them without needing prompts from her tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
