I believe tutoring helps students develop a genuine love for learning. There are 2 characteristics a tutor needs to achieve this. Firstly, the tutor should have an open and friendly personality. Learning is inherently effortful, and having someone friendly to guide the process makes it more enjoyable and productive. Additionally, tutors need to…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to help them feel supported and encouraged. This means teaching in a way that makes sense to them and giving them helpful feedback. It's also important to boost their confidence so they believe in themselves and stay motivated to learn. Creating a friendly and open environment where they…

As far as my understanding, as a tutor, he/she always needs to motivate their students to think more widely and creatively. It is true, initially, they will fail several times. Allowing them to do it, will build their confidence for their future, which will be eventually worth it for their life. As a tutor, I am always friendly, patiently try to…

To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. While preparing a topic I prepare as if the students know everything (which helps…

It is always for me to put their thoughts first and give them the importance. It is simply how a student learn and grow. A little bit of channeling of concepts, guidance and being there as a support is what makes it work. It is all about concepts how well you know them and how easy you can make them for students to understand. I always try to…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to inspire a sense of lifelong learning for the subject that is being tutored. My major strength is my appreciation of the subjects I tutor. Along with that, I always prepare myself with material, supplementary exercises and further reading before class. As a student engineer, I am also very adept…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make them feel comfortable and create a positive environment. In my childhood, I was taught "a good teacher is someone who makes a student fall in love with the subject" and the idea has always been in me. I try to follow that ideology by making leaning…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to equip a student with critical thinking skills relating to HOW to approach a problem. If a student can frame a problem, or recognize which tools are appropriate, then the rest becomes much more manageable. - I have a good knowledge of subjects, and their applications. - I can often recommend…

A tutor provides a supportive environment for their students. This is most true for the students who struggle the most, who may need more help than their peers who don't find the topic as difficult. I definitely think that there needs to be a solid understanding of the student and the way in which they learn so that the tutor can teach them in a way which is most effective to them. Along with this, I think that the tutor should make the student feel comfortable with them so that they feel free to ask questions or ask for further…

Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

Students can of course vary greatly in their strengths, difficulties and needs. This is true both intrinsically and as a function of development and external context. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is therefore to diagnose those individual needs, and "meet the student where they are." The essential problem of tutoring…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a enriching and safe learning environment for their tutee. Encouraging students while also providing deep guidance to the student are what contribute to this. I tend to find the people learn best when they enjoy learning instead of through academic pressure. The tutor can find a common wavelength and understand the student's way of grasping. Every student has a different way of learning and perceive stuff. i find out different ways to solve one question. Students, in my opinion, are like clay that can be molded in any way. And if I have such a wonderful opportunity, I'll do everything in my power to make the most of it. I believe that a tutor should always be ready to help pupils with their concerns. In order for students to do better under him, a tutor must not only assist students academically…

Inside Holland Park WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Emma worked through ratios, angles, and percentages in detail, including an extended session to address extra questions via FaceTime.

Year 8 student Max focused on algebraic equations and substituting values, practising with worked examples.

For Year 7, Ava revised index laws and prime factor form using step-by-step breakdowns to build confidence with challenging exam-style problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student did not complete assigned homework, which meant in the next session, "we had to repeat last week's content" on long division and cross multiplication instead of progressing.

In Year 11, one student left practice exam questions unfinished before a test; as a result, their ability to recall percentage rules under pressure dropped sharply.

A Year 4 child often avoided writing out working for multi-digit addition—leading to confusion with carrying digits and hidden mistakes that took extra time to track down.

One tutor noted, "he tends to doubt himself," so written answers were left blank or erased when uncertain.

Recent Achievements

One Holland Park West tutor noticed that a Year 8 student, Sal, initially struggled to explain maths concepts aloud but recently taught the tutor how to solve ratio and fraction problems—showing real growth in understanding and independence.

In another session, a high schooler named Isaac had always relied on memorising algebraic expressions; after working through the reasoning behind them, he started answering questions confidently without falling back on rote recall.

Meanwhile, Dao in Year 4, who once hesitated to write independently, now writes well-structured sentences with less prompting and has become impressively quick with multiplication facts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Holland Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Marshall Road State School.
