It's important for a tutor to help a student get the correct answer, but more importantly it is critical that the student understands the concept behind which the answer was based. It is important for a tutor to be able to communicate with the individual in the way which is best suited for the student so that they can efficiently grasp the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel comfortable enough to make mistakes and not become afraid. Often making mistakes can be seen as a bad thing, but I see it as a way to grow and learn from the mistake you made. Strengths wise I’m good at explaining the question on the board and ensuring that it is worded…

a tutor must strive to find what a student lack and try to complement it. For example , a slacking student , in most cases, might be just lacking vision for his future. A tutor must guide him towards setting targets for himself. I am able to identify learning styles of…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make a student feel empowered by realising that they are capable of achieving their goals in the classroom. I believe that this realisation comes about when they understand that at a young age especially, intelligence is not fixed but able to grow when they challenge themselves. I think this is…

Tutors are the great influencers of respected fields & faculties. The most important thing is to develop personalized learning strategies according to the individual needs of the student. This should be complemented by constant efforts to induce a two-way channel towards Education, augmenting traditional educational roles. Rather than mere transfer of academic knowledge, the tutor should encourage the student to…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them feel more confident in entering exams and answering questions. As a tutor, I believe the most important things I can do for a student extend beyond imparting knowledge. Secondly, fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment is essential. This includes…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are being an attentive and listening mentor, ready to help with any issues. As a tutor apart from the subject we need to teach ethics, moral values. And how to overcome the problems they are facing in a day to day life. My major strength is my experience. Inside HornsbyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lucy revised angle sums in polygons and practiced calculating surface area for various shapes.

In Year 9, Daniel tackled simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then moved on to worded algebra problems for extra challenge.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Emily focused on compound versus simple interest calculations and worked through HSC-style financial maths questions to consolidate exam readiness.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student repeatedly relied on memorizing formulas rather than understanding when and why to use them—"not every question can fit into a formula perfectly," the tutor noted—making it tough to adapt to unfamiliar problems.

A Year 11 student tackling statistics struggled with organizing key definitions and formulas; instead of preparing a reference sheet, time was lost searching through notes mid-task.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner's confidence dropped whenever questions were worded differently or seemed long, sometimes skipping attempts altogether until prompted.

During trigonometry in Year 10, missed homework left gaps that resurfaced during multi-step bearings questions.

Recent Achievements

A Hornsby tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously struggled with worded problems now picks out key information and confidently applies the depreciation formula—something she hesitated to attempt before.

Another high schooler, after weeks of confusion with simultaneous equations, managed to solve them algebraically without hints, even remembering all necessary steps on his own.

At the primary level, a Year 5 student who used to guess answers when unsure has started underlining parts of questions and openly asks for help if stuck. In one session, he finished every question in section one with little to no prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hornsby Shire Library & Information Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hornsby Girls High School.
