The most important thing is to get a student interested in the topic. Ability to inspire is what people remember about good teachers decades after school. Second is explaining tricky ideas. Third is building self-confidence. Ability to explain, patience, finding interesting examples. I would test a student's knowledge of each topic before moving…

I believe a tutor's role is to help students truly understand what they're learning, build their confidence, and develop skills they can use beyond the classroom. I'm patient and adaptable, and I take the time to explain concepts in different ways until they really make sense to the student. I try to create an encouraging space where they feel…

The key benefit of a tutor is that they can provide individualised support for a student. Tutors have the unique position of being able to become very familiar with their students' understanding of subjects, and employ the most effective strategies to improve their learning. While teachers at students' schools often may not be able to allocate…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and build the student’s confidence in their own abilities. The most important thing that a tutor can do for their students is to build a relationship. The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

Be good listener as learn to pick up clues in your…

My son has recently started maths tutoring. His tutor is great and has helped my son to improve quickly. We're currently doing the tutoring online during the pandemic which is working really well. Highly recommended.

Inside Hurlstone ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ivy focused on revising operations with positive and negative numbers and addition of fractions with different denominators, including converting improper fractions to mixed numerals.

In Year 8, Lewis tackled trigonometric ratios for finding unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles and worked through index laws using examples from a recent test.

For Year 9, sessions included expanding and factorising algebraic expressions using the distributive law and working through financial mathematics topics such as simple interest and depreciation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, when working on trigonometry, often avoided writing out steps for rearranging equations—"he tries to solve it in his head and skips lines," a tutor observed. This made small errors hard to find, especially with negative numbers.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner struggled with times tables and would hesitate before attempting more complex fraction problems; forgotten multiplication facts slowed her progress on simplifying fractions.

In Year 10 financial maths, one student left questions incomplete because they were unsure whether to calculate interest or total amounts—this uncertainty led to confusion during timed tests.

Recent Achievements

A Hurlstone Park tutor recently noticed Lewis, a high school student, catching and correcting his own errors while working through complex algebraic expressions—a big shift from earlier sessions where he'd wait for hints.

Another highlight came when Ruby, also in high school, confidently explained how different transformations affect the sketching of parabolas and interpreted Venn diagrams with minimal guidance after previously needing step-by-step support.

For a younger student, Ivy's willingness to ask clarifying questions during her lesson stood out; she used to quietly move on if she was unsure but now actively seeks understanding before continuing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School.
