Teach Students How to Think, Not Just What to Memorise My most important role is to help students develop independent mathematical reasoning. Instead of relying on memorised formulas or copying worked examples, I encourage students to understand the principles behind each problem and recognise how to approach new questions. Identify and Fix…

A tutor must recognise the level of understanding of a student and then explain concepts to that level. This will ensure progress of the student. 1) I have patience to keep explaining till the student understands it. 2) I teach each student differently based on their level of understanding. 3) I prepare myself well before the session, try to…

The most important thing can be to understand and relate to the student as much as possible, for example understand their problems, think from their perspective and teach them in a style which best suits them. My strengths are that my experience with teachers and fellow students is very fresh. I have also achieved the highest grade in one of the…

I think self-taught is the most important thing that a tutor can teach a student. This is because self-taught can go with them anywhere but the tutor can not. Additionally, a tutor can not teach a student everything, so at some points, the student needs to explore themselves. I am patient and independent in studying. This is because I have been…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students become independent learners rather than making them dependent on the tutor. I do not believe in spoon-feeding answers all the time. Instead, I believe a tutor should guide students, encourage them to think independently, and help them build confidence in their own…

The Tutor should have a lot of patience while teaching children, as each child is different from one other. Tutor should understand each student's ability and talent and motivate them to do further in their own field. It should be the tutor's job to go to each student individually and ask if they are good with study materials and understanding…

I believe as a tutor it is my responsibility to act as a guide for my students, I can't learn a lesson on behalf of my students rather guide my students so that they can find out what interests them the most. I think the most important thing you can do as a teacher is to equip your students with the means to learn. There are skills to learn anything. As a teacher, you need to teach your students knowledge as well as show them how to learn. Once students have mastered the method of learning and at the same time gained the confidence to learn, they can…

The most important role of a tutor is to equip students with the critical thinking skills and study habits they need to eventually learn independently, rather than simply feeding them the answers. To achieve this, a tutor must create a safe, encouraging space where making mistakes is viewed as a necessary and valuable part of the learning process.…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s confidence and create a safe space for asking questions. Looking back, the best professors I had were those who encouraged independent thinking and went beyond the textbook. In the long run, this approach helps students become more adaptable, curious, and capable of…

I think a tutor can inspire the students and teach them the importance of knowledge. I also think the students many a times look up to their teachers as role models. So a tutor should also be a persona that they imitate! And hence it's the duty of the teacher to set a good example in front of their students for them to learn and grow! I can be…

In my opinion, the most important thing, that a tutor can do for the student is to understand the problems which the student is facing, and then come up with a plan on how to overcome these problems. Apart from this, understanding the knowledge graph of the student, and teaching him/her according to the pattern, which they understand the most, is…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to first be understanding as each student has different experiences with learning subjects and may also have problems outside of education. Secondly would be to be approachable and appear easy-going so the student will not be intimidated or scared in having learning sessions with you.…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
