What is also important is to make sure the students have fun while learning, for that will ensure that whatever they are…

Clear concepts. Once your concepts are clear you can do any kind of question, sometimes even harder questions. Every concept especially in economics and maths have diagrams, I love working with diagrams and I think those are the best things tutors can do for a student. I think I give good real life examples and good diagrams to make concepts…

I believe a tutor can inspire a student to be a better human being. A tutor can inspire a student to think differently, to think out of the box, to be creative. The primary reason why a student may hire a tutor is to give them the in-depth understanding of "Why" the concept is the way it hence. Hence, explaining them the core concept, which enables them to solve the problems during their exams and assignments without having any second doubts. Build their independence, not their reliance on you. My favourite part of tutoring is watching a student get to the point where they don't need me to solve the next problem for them, just to have been shown how once. That, plus consistency: showing up, remembering where we left off, and treating their progress as seriously as they do. Patience and…

Build their confidence. Every student is different. One cannot treat them on the same plain. Some are aware of their shortcomings and are just confused. Some are hardworking while others can be smart-workers or differently remarked. A tutor must recognise that talent in them and help them use it in growing. Explaining instances metaphorically…

Listen to the student. I think it's important that tutors listen to their students to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and get to know them. By doing this, you'll be able to help them in the way that works best for them, in the areas that they're struggling with the most. Sometimes there are things outside of schoolwork that make it hard…

A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. Anthony, Balwyn North

Inside Ivanhoe EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mitch worked on planning and editing a creative writing short story, focusing on making his writing style more engaging and refining tense and characterisation.

For Year 11 Chemistry, Lucy reviewed types of chemical bonds—covalent, ionic, hydrogen—and practised identifying polarity in molecules.

Meanwhile, Year 12 English student Sam analysed persuasive techniques in VCAA argument analysis exams, comparing tone and arguments across sample articles and practising structured essay plans using CCCTAP methods.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student did not complete a short story over the break, meaning lesson time was spent planning instead of giving feedback on writing.

In VCE English, one student had difficulty drawing out meaning in terms of film techniques for 'On the Waterfront,' and hesitated to share ideas despite good insights.

A Year 8 maths student sometimes jumped to conclusions before reading questions carefully—this led to avoidable errors when interpreting worded problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student left assigned homework unfinished and struggled to recall times tables quickly during practice, making it harder to keep up with new content in sessions.

Recent Achievements

During one Ivanhoe East tutoring session, a Year 10 student shifted from waiting for hints to tackling analysis questions independently. This showed new persistence in breaking down film themes before asking for help.

In VCE English, another student who previously hesitated to use evidence began actively selecting and justifying quotes in essays without tutor prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who once made frequent "silly mistakes" on times tables started working more neatly and self-checking answers out loud, recently scoring full marks on her 3s and 4s.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ivanhoe Library & Cultural Hub—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ivanhoe East Primary School-Wilfred Road Campus.
