I think the most important thing is being able to be understanding of the student. Their goals, their skill level, their learning style and their circumstances are all aspects that should be taken into consideration for each student. I believe a good relationship with the student and the parent goes a long way. It creates trust and builds…

Understanding what they understand and don't. If you don't adapt accordingly, not only will it take longer, but even if you can help them understand, you won't foster a sense of confidence in the student for further studies. Adaptability and a deeper understanding of the subject matter I'm teaching, which lets me approach problems from different…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to boost their confidence. This boost in confidence will increase the student's self-esteem and, consequently, will help improve their grades. If a student can finish a session with a smile on their face and the confidence that they understand the concept, the session was very…

Inside KaloramaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Erin worked on strategies for recalling times tables and ways to improve focus during problem-solving.

Year 10 student Codi revised circular functions in preparation for an upcoming exam and practiced applying trigonometric ratios.

For a senior secondary student, recent lessons focused on Unit 3 Chemistry, covering fuel cells as well as redox reactions, with relevant textbook questions used for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, one student avoided writing out working for large addition and subtraction problems, preferring mental calculations. As a tutor noted, "she tends to add and subtract big numbers in her head rather than writing down her working out," which led to confusion when errors appeared.

In Year 10 English, another student's ideas were strong but she struggled to express them clearly on paper; overly wordy sentences sometimes muddled her arguments during essay tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 maths student repeatedly left revision sheets untouched before tutoring sessions—this meant valuable time was spent catching up rather than focusing on specific exam-style questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kalorama recently saw some great steps forward with students across different year levels. In Year 10 maths, Ayelet began tackling index laws with much less guidance and now talks through her process aloud—previously, she hesitated to explain her reasoning but is becoming more self-assured each session.

Meanwhile, Lizzie (Year 12 English) has started embedding quotes into her essays without prompting and even introduced new interpretations to their discussions, a shift from relying mainly on tutor feedback before.

In a younger session, Maya challenged herself by completing a division speed round in just two minutes after struggling with accuracy and timing earlier in the term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Montrose Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Dandenong Primary School.
