The most important thing an english tutor can do is to build up a student's self belief so they can continue improving and reach their goals, whether they be academic or not. Tutoring is about giving a student the space they need to make mistakes, and teaching them that it is okay to make them. It is important that a student and tutor can build…

I believe that an english tutor must not add additional pressure to a student as I am well aware of the stress and anxiety VCE and other year level courses can bring. Therefore, it is vital that a tutor understands this and ensures that not only is the student exceeding academically but also advising them about strategies to consistently keep on…

Encouraging kids and placing them in a healthy and thriving learning environment is just as important as educating them. I will speak encouragement into students, to believe in themselves and their abilities to thrive in their learning. This is so important, as I have seen and experienced the worst of demeaning comments and attitudes from…

I think an english tutor needs to be patient and easy going in a way that students can be comfortable with, and question things they feel unable to question in their school classroom. I think tutors need to teach their students the importance of practice and resilience, especially in VCE. English is a subject which takes lots of practice and…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that an english tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen…

In my high school days, i went to alot of tutors and i learned the difference between a good and a bad tutor. Bad tutors i believe stay within the box, afraid to go out and expose the students true potential. A good tutor can not only help the student keep on track of school work and assist in any difficulties the student may have, but also push…

A tutor can create a healthy learning environment, where their student is able to contribute and ask questions without hesitation. A tutor should also be able to inspire their students to learn and enjoy the teaching, rather than discourage them away from learning. The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of an english tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to…

The most important thing is to communicate on a level that is with the students so they can understand the topics you are teaching, so they still feel connected and engaged in learning. In addition, also having a variety of strategies as one size does not fit all so it is about finding the best fit for each student. My strength is to provide…

A tutor can show a student why instead of just how. Students step into academics and are shown what to do and how to do it, but they don't understand why until much later on in life. A tutor is in a way a parent, trying to teach their child. Essentially, their future depends on how well they have been prepared, no matter how small the…

To spark curiosity and interest, that they my also push themselves out of their own desire to learn more. And in doing all of this, will in turn build their self confidence. First things is to make them feel comfortable so that they can so their doubts. Next, understand the prior knowledge of a student and then give examples on the problems based on that. It helps them to understand various concepts easily and they start building interest in studies. Lastly, try to make education interesting for them! My main…

The most important things an english tutor can do for a student is build confidence in the student. I've encountered a few students in the Year 5 STEM and Maths program at my school who were quiet and I began to realise that they didn't believe that they could learn STEM or improve their math skills because they thought they were 'dumb'. I quickly…

Local Reviews

I'd like to highly recommend Dwight to any other families. His kind and patient demeanor translate into a great tutor. He's been very helpful. My daughter just got her results from her Algebra test which Dwight had to catch her up on as that's one of the topics she missed. She got 93%. Great result and proof of Dwights great tutoring.

Inside Keilor LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Leah focused on financial mathematics, including compound interest and reducing balance loans, applying formulas with a financial calculator.

In Year 10, Evangeline worked through trigonometry—using Sine and Cosine Rules and interpreting trig graphs—and practised unit circle concepts.

For Year 12, Sam tackled networks and graphs, exploring chapter content such as shortest paths and network matrices using step-by-step diagrams to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student arrived without her exercise book, making it hard to track progress or review past learning—as a tutor noted, it was difficult to determine what she had learned.

In Year 10 algebra, one student struggled with note-taking and often left equations incomplete; messy notes led to repeated confusion during revision.

Another senior student in probability entered sessions unprepared, having forgotten both textbook and basic materials like pen and paper. This lack of organization meant lesson time was spent improvising rather than building skills. The result: avoidable frustration when trying to connect new concepts with earlier work.

Recent Achievements

One Keilor Lodge tutor noticed a high school student, Kristian, take real initiative by asking to revisit tricky maths topics and then completing all his assigned homework—a big shift from relying on prompts in earlier sessions.

In another recent session, Leah (also high school) began trying out new problem-solving methods herself rather than waiting for step-by-step guidance; she even tackled unfamiliar material using these strategies.

Meanwhile, a younger student, Evangeline, started creating her own summary sheets before tests and now writes more detailed notes without being prompted—something she hesitated to do just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sydenham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Catholic Regional College North Keilor.
