The most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is providing as much information as they can. Answer their questions, solve their problems, and make sure that they really understand the material. I am a very good listener. When a student is facing difficulty, I believe the problem is communication. Talk to them and try to find out what is…

To be understanding, acknowledge that different students have different capabilities which requires a unique individualized approach. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand said student, and adjust their methods accordingly. When it comes to mathematics in particular, I like to approach problems using general…

I think the most important thing a tutor can be is a mentor and a human being. Someone for younger students to look up to and guide but also relate to in other aspects outside of tutoring. I communicate very well and am extremely patient with younger. I'm able to clearly break down problems and can explain concepts very…

The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. My strengths are my simplistic and analogy-based approach to explaining concepts, and my emphasis on exam technique that allows students to feel…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

A tutor can transform a student's life by helping them become more confident in their academic career, which inevitably improves general confidence. Further, a tutor provides mentoring and coaching as experts in their field which a student can carry with them beyond school, ensuring they are set up for success in their chosen field. I believe a…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence and foster independent thinking. A good tutor guides their student to understand the "why" behind concepts, helping them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This is essential in ensuring that the student is able to independently…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is create a supportive learning environment where students feel confident enough to make mistakes and learn from them. It's also important to encourage independent critical thinking skills which are useful regardless of what subject the student ultimately ends up studying. As a tutor,…

Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and create a safe space for the student. When tutors don't listen it'll be a waste of time for both parties. This can be very hard because sometimes students may not be able to pinpoint what they don't understand or they might just feel a bit embarrassed. This is where…

A tutor must always have patience for their students. They cannot rush them, and a student cannot be forced to understand specific content. I believe that tutors must friendly, approachable and sociable people who the student can feel comfortable around, for a relaxed learning environment. A tutor should support the development of the student, but in the same way do so without making the student over-reliant on the tutor. In this way, the student will be able to maintain their success throughout their whole academic career. I think it is important to be patient with your students. Some students are slower to learn than others, and others learn things in different ways compared to the rest. Maintain a positive attitude, take away the stress from learning, guide them and restructure their approach to studying when they come across roadblocks. Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on mean, median and mode calculations as well as interpreting graphs.

In Year 10, Ethan practised non-right angled trigonometry using the sine rule and cosine rule.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Liam focused on basic trigonometry and explored normal distribution, including understanding its key properties and uses.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often worked out maths in their head instead of writing steps, which made it harder to spot where misunderstandings with algebra or negative signs occurred—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors.

In Year 11 Physics, a student froze when unsure how to start a question and needed guidance breaking down what was being asked; missing definitions slowed progress.

A senior Chemistry student relied heavily on checking notes for formulas rather than recalling them independently, leading to lost time during problem-solving.

Nerves in impromptu speeches (Year 10 English) led to rushed delivery and forgotten structure.

Recent Achievements

One Kensington tutor noted a high school student who previously hesitated to speak up now talks through his problem-solving process out loud and actively asks questions when stuck, rather than staying quiet.

Another secondary student showed new independence by checking over each maths problem and explaining their reasoning step-by-step—something he'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner, after struggling with fractions last term, has started converting mixed numbers independently and can now solve most ratio problems solo.

Last week, one completed all ten practice questions without needing any hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coogee Boys' Preparatory School.
