Not to do the work for the student. I think that a tutor should be prepared as well as eager for ever lesson and flexible to adjust to the needs of their student. A tutor's enthusiasm should encourage their student. Tutors should be imaginative and creative in order to help their student understand as well as make sure that they will remember the…

Often times I've found that a lot of students struggle with certain parts in learning but don't speak up about them because of being afraid. In light of this, I believe the most important things a tutor can do is be the more proactive party in this situation - which should go without saying. Observing your student and noting down what difficulties…

The tutor should be able to teach more and better than what the student can learn at school. The most important thing they can do is teach a concept efficiently in a way that is tailored to the student to help them get ahead of their peers. - strong knowledge of the syllabus - good at writing - dynamic approach to teaching; using multiple…

I think as a tutor the most important thing you can do is to teach a student to want to learn, rather than just giving them all the answers, because if you give them positive reinforcement they can do the work themselves and feel much more accomplished. I think I am calm and understanding, but know when to be firm if I need to be to help the kids…

A tutor can do two primarily important things for a student: 1) recognize and modify their teaching approach to consider their student's specific learning style, 2) maintain a friendly yet professional rapport so that the student feels comfortable engaging with the tutor and content. For myself, these are fundamental qualities a tutor should…

Tutors should not only be proficient at teaching but also building the students' self esteem. As a tutor, I want my students to be confident in their ability and give them the conviction they need to achieve their goals. Secondly, it is also important for a tutor to be humble and open to making mistakes in the classroom. Having the humility to…

Provide a safe space for the student to make mistakes without judgement. They don’t always have this at school with their peers looking on. Provide high level materials that don’t just duplicate those from school or in generic books. A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

Inside KensingtonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Olivia worked on mean, median and mode calculations as well as interpreting graphs.

In Year 10, Ethan practised non-right angled trigonometry using the sine rule and cosine rule.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Liam focused on basic trigonometry and explored normal distribution, including understanding its key properties and uses.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student often worked out maths in their head instead of writing steps, which made it harder to spot where misunderstandings with algebra or negative signs occurred—he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors.

In Year 11 Physics, a student froze when unsure how to start a question and needed guidance breaking down what was being asked; missing definitions slowed progress.

A senior Chemistry student relied heavily on checking notes for formulas rather than recalling them independently, leading to lost time during problem-solving.

Nerves in impromptu speeches (Year 10 English) led to rushed delivery and forgotten structure.

Recent Achievements

One Kensington tutor noted a high school student who previously hesitated to speak up now talks through his problem-solving process out loud and actively asks questions when stuck, rather than staying quiet.

Another secondary student showed new independence by checking over each maths problem and explaining their reasoning step-by-step—something he'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner, after struggling with fractions last term, has started converting mixed numbers independently and can now solve most ratio problems solo.

Last week, one completed all ten practice questions without needing any hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Randwick Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Coogee Boys' Preparatory School.
