The most important thing is to create a learning environment where the student feels comfortable and engaged in receiving and participating in academic learning. Consistency and patience can reinvent a subject and allow the student to be more receptive to the content that is being taught. As the student continues to improve, they will develop an…

To provide communication, patience and compassion. It is very important for tutors to accept each student for their own strengths and shortcomings in order to help students perform well academically. It also is important to be creative with techniques and materials that are not used in a classroom setting. Examples of this are customizing reading…

I also posses organisational and planning skills so that I can structure lessons and prepare for sessions effectively so that all sessions are optimised. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is provide every opportunity for them to kindle their own knowledge. As Socrates said, "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel." In other words, it is the tutor's job to introduce new knowledge as the base tools and then question the student to allow them to…

A tutor makes a student feel like even though the work is difficult and deadlines are looming, everything will be okay. The tutor acts as a mentor who helps students to improve their time management and study skills, as well as clarifying difficult points. This makes the student feel reassured about their progress through the course. I like to…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

Be patient, I know from experience it can be hard for students to learn when you feel rushed or your questions are unimportant. Therefore, allowing students to feel as though they can take the time to ask all types of questions to support their confidence is invaluable to an educator. I am patient and judgment-free, I allow students to ask…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is be encouraging towards a student; often students get tutoring in a subject they are struggling in and are already mentally finding it difficult so it is critical a tutor positively encourages them and reminds them of their improvement. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel at ease within the subject being taught. These include: making sure they do not put too much pressure on themselves if they do not understand a topic, and giving them the confidence to ask questions. Complete trust and availability on the part of the tutor is also important.…

Excellent service when I telephoned to inquire about a tutor in my area. The tutor was polite, friendly and, most importantly, knowledgeable in her field.

Inside Kensington GardensTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Emily focused on subtraction and multiplication, using visual aids to strengthen understanding of number facts.

In Year 11, Olivia worked through quadratic equations and practiced sketching graphs of parabolas to build confidence with exam-style questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James tackled differential equations and explored statistical regression techniques, applying these concepts to real-world data sets during the session.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student often left school homework unfinished, and as a tutor noted, "missed a lesson," which meant less time reinforcing number skills.

In one session, a Year 11 student struggled to write out questions and answers clearly during algebra work—untidy working made it difficult to spot errors or explain thinking later.

For a Year 9 test on geometry and simultaneous equations, there hadn't been enough revision time; gaps showed up in the result.

After setbacks, one Year 10 student expressed low confidence about her maths test score, despite likely doing better than she believed.

Recent Achievements

One Kensington Gardens tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitation, now takes the lead on tough integration problems and recently reported their latest test was probably their best yet.

Another high schooler showed newfound independence by working through challenging vectors questions without prompting—just a few sessions ago, they needed step-by-step support.

In primary maths, Aryo started bringing his own homework to lessons and now answers many questions unaided, especially around times tables and fractions; last week he finished an entire worksheet unaided.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Burnside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's Collegiate Girls' School.
