This is why I believe it's important to teach in a friendly environment. I am usually also available to students out of hours to answer their last minute questions before exams, if any…

A tutor should be approachable and they should encourage students to ask each and every question they have in mind. A tutor should also be able to act like a mentor for educational and professional guide. However, it is very important for tutors to keep a professional boundary in mind. Hence, explaining them the core concept, which enables them to solve the problems during their exams and assignments without having any second doubts. The most important thing a tutor can do is to make studying not feel like a boring task. The more fun a class is, the more likely it is that the student will put in extra effort in the subject. Also, an environment with healthy competition is necessary for maximising the output of each individual. As I have recently completed my schooling, I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is relate to them. Everyone is different and learns in a different way. Hence, you must adjust your method of teaching for each individual student. Some people are auditory, visual or written learners, some like algebra, calculus, or trigonometry. Moreover, if you are understanding of your…

The most pivotal thing is support. A teacher is essentially a mentor, and mentors are supposed to provide encouragement to the students and make the students fall in love with the subjects. A teacher should assess the performance of the students on a regular basis to ensure the goals of the students are being met. This involves testing them…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping the student believe in themselves and letting them know they can do well. I think the most important things a tutor can do are build a student’s confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a positive learning environment. Mostly, I think it's important to be consistent in class attendance to make max use out of the limited time period. I also think that always believing in the student makes a huge difference, especially in maths. They need to know that someone sees their capability apart from them. Adding patience to this and allowing them a safe space to make…

Alex has been a great tutor for my son. He is patient, encouraging and explains things clearly. My son feels feels so much more confident in Maths thanks to Alex!
Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
