The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them. I believe that tutoring sessions should be based on the student's needs in a specific subject area, and the only way to understand these needs is to have an honest, open conversation with them. Listening to a student's needs, their preferred learning styles and other factors…

Helping students feel confident in their abilities creates a strong foundation for learning, as they are more likely to engage actively and tackle challenges head-on.…

The most important thing tutors can do for a student is to just be there for the student and give their students the motivation and encouragement to work, having a tutor myself those were the things that assisted me in achieving my scores. This kind of motivation and encouragement can then build into other parts of the student's life thus…

I would say to keep the student intersted and excited about learning. You have them invested in the subject and half your job is done. Teaching doesnt have to be monotonous, mundane and boring. I am smart, young and very well spoken. I speak from a place of confidence and can be very entertaining for kids/youth. I would like to think I am quite…

The goal of tutoring, in some sense, should be to equip students with the skills to no longer need tutoring. I believe this is best achieved by allowing the student to choose study-related goals, and help them take achievable steps in order to get there. As their competence increases in proximity to the larger goal, so too does their confidence as…

Whilst ensuring the student learns or develops topics/skills is important, fostering an interest and curiosity in the subject is more important in my opinion. Through the support of teachers and students in my schooling I have grown a deep interest in maths, science and literature, which makes study and learning these subjects easy! I am patient,…

The most important thing any sort of teacher or mentor can do for not just students, but anyone, is to make sure the students believe in themselves and their abilities, for that will take them beyond any test or assignment. What is also important is to make sure the students have fun while learning, for that will ensure that whatever they are…

The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. When students are encouraged to personally connect with a subject, its quirks and intricacies, they stop seeing learning as a chore and start seeing it as something they truly enjoy. I'm really good at…

Supporting the student and building their confidence is very important, as the belief that you are capable and have a strong grasp of the material is essential to success. Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. It's one thing to explain to a student how to approach concepts and assessment tasks, but to actively encourage them to love school is something that separates a good tutor from a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be understanding. 100% Motivation and ensuring they feel like they have a support structure whose best interest is to see them succeed. I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to celebrate their successes, big or small. It can be difficult for some students to maintain a love for learning, or even just develop a motivation to study more, so I believe that a tutor is a pillar of support for the student throughout their learning. A tutor can give that…

A tutor should be patient and supportive. Every child sets his/her own pace of doing things and sometimes they might not get it right, so it is important to be understanding. I am very patient, it doesn't matter how long it takes for a child to understand a topic, because it is quite normal. I would not mind repeating it over and over. I am also…

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
