I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help students become independent learners rather than making them dependent on the tutor. I do not believe in spoon-feeding answers all the time. Instead, I believe a tutor should guide students, encourage them to think independently, and help them build confidence in their own…

Make tutors unnecessary. The worst outcome is a student who can only solve problems when their tutor is in the room. Everything I do builds the student's own reasoning process, teaching them how to break down unfamiliar problems, check their own work, and trace errors back independently. In science that means understanding logic behind a formula,…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to trust his student and teach him lessons as engaging as possible. Trusting student is very important as the student will gain more motivation when he or she is trusted. I think the most important thing is helping students truly understand concepts rather than just memorising solutions. A good tutor should build a student's confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a supportive space where they feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build understanding, confidence, and independence. Of course, helping a student improve academically matters, but a good tutor should do more than just help them finish homework or prepare for a test. First thing which I can assure to all my students is that I'll make them understand the concepts clear so that they can remember and apply it forever in their life. Also I think a good teacher has to teach the subject from a student point of view, so that we can understand where they face problem in understanding the concept and help them to…

In my opinion, the most important thing, that a tutor can do for the student is to understand the problems which the student is facing, and then come up with a plan on how to overcome these problems. Apart from this, understanding the knowledge graph of the student, and teaching him/her according to the pattern, which they understand the most, is…

I think the most important thing you can do as a teacher is to equip your students with the means to learn. There are skills to learn anything. As a teacher, you need to teach your students knowledge as well as show them how to learn. Once students have mastered the method of learning and at the same time gained the confidence to learn, they can…

As each student is unique it is important to assess their level of learning, identify the areas where they are lacking and then provide suitable tutoring. The most important role of a tutor is to equip students with the critical thinking skills and study habits they need to eventually learn independently, rather than simply feeding them the answers. To achieve this, a tutor must create a safe, encouraging space where making mistakes is viewed as a necessary and valuable part of the learning process.…

A tutor should be able to inspire a student. By giving knowledge, a tutor should not just make a student achieve a higher grade. Instead, I believe that a tutor should inspire students, stimulate their brains, challenge them and also spark curiosity. This way, a student will have natural interest towards the subject and will be motivated to learn…

Alex has been a great tutor for my son. He is patient, encouraging and explains things clearly. My son feels feels so much more confident in Maths thanks to Alex!
Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
