The most important things a tutor can do for a student are listening carefully, being patient and identifying that not all students are the same. A strategy that may work wonders for one student could not be useful for another student. Being able to employ different strategies to different students is a key aspect of being a great tutor. My…

Tutors need to be understanding and patient while knowing that students may not have the required knowledge to solve a simple question quickly. They may also have knowledge gaps which the tutor will need to discover and revise with the student for their question solving ability to improve. So most importantly, a tutor needs to ensure students are…

Being accepting of any & all questions in a friendly and non-judgmental manner, so as to make sure the student feels comfortable asking such questions, because otherwise it would defeat the purpose of being tutored. I also think that it's vital for the tutor to give their students the best chance at being able to succeed with their own ability…

I believe that is to impart the knowledge he/she has to the student about a certain subject, in such way and manner that is very considerate to the mental and emotional well-being and capacity of the student. It is important that the tutor knows his/her student’s capabilities, so the tutor will have a basis on how he/she will tackle the…

I believe the most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and foster a genuine sense of self-belief in their ability to learn the topic. When students trust their ability and gain a bit of confidence, that's only when they can properly engage with the topics, take challenges and persist through them. I think it's…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, assist students for high academics, while also creating a supportive learning environment. A tutor should also teach students individually at times and not simply providing answers. Ultimately, a tutor should aim to empower students to take ownership of their…

The most important thing I could do for a student is to work and adapt to the way that suits them, not all children understand concepts the same way and some need help in certain areas compared to others. This will be able to help me adapt to their learning strategies and make the tutoring most beneficial for the student. I am a committed tutor…

I believe tutors pass on a sense of confidence to their students as they develop their skills. It is that virtue that students bring back to their classroom ready to apply what they have learned during their tutor's session. Patience is a key value that I possess and that will make me succeed in this role. Acknowledging that different student…

From my perspective, a tutor is also a teacher as we teach and deliver knowledge to students. Each student sits at a different level, which requires different tutoring method and approaches. Understanding is key in tutoring as adequate assistance would help a student to achieve their best potentials. Secondly, we as tutoring should make students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is not only teach the content but make it relevant and fun. No one likes to slog through dry content. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have the ability to cater to their needs and build self esteem, especially when one method of learning isn’t working. This not only allows for the student to understand concepts in other ways but also ensures and improves self esteem as often, students may fall behind from a…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

The most significant things a tutor need to consider is the quality of the lesson, not the quantity. It is important for a tutor to be a positive thinker and a persevering role model for the student. Inside KingsgroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex worked on identifying and extending number patterns as well as solving addition and subtraction problems using practical examples.

Year 7 student Olivia tackled fraction concepts, including comparing fractions of different denominators, and practised rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Marcus focused on two-step algebraic equations and applied formulas to calculate circumference, using targeted textbook exercises for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student avoided showing working, instead "drawing out algebra questions to understand what the question is asking," which made it harder to catch and correct missteps.

A Year 8 student mixed up area and volume in geometry word problems by jumping straight to answers before reading fully—this often led to confusion when units changed mid-question.

Another in Year 10 struggled with index laws and was advised to improve note organization: "organising all math work in a neat manner, including tutoring worksheets and notes." Missed steps meant errors went unnoticed until revision time.

Recent Achievements

One Kingsgrove tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who had always hesitated with multi-step algebra now working through wordier questions almost entirely on his own, no longer waiting for hints before starting.

A Year 11 student, previously quick to guess at answers in geometry, is now pausing to write out each calculation step before substituting values into formulas—a big shift from her earlier rush.

In primary, one Year 4 learner who used to rely on counting fingers has started tackling simple subtraction mentally and will even try times tables without prompting. Last session, he completed all ten problems in his head without reaching for his hands once.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley North Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Ursula's College.
