I believe a tutor must build a students understanding and confidence. It’s not just about helping them get the right answers, but making sure they actually understand the reasoning so that they can also succeed independently. I also believe that it is vital for a tutor to allow the student to not feel afraid to ask questions or make mistakes,…

To engage their student in what they are being taught. Often, it is easy for tutors to treat teaching as a rote-memory recitation of their materials, without actually using other analogies and connective methods that students benefit from. If a tutor is unwilling to invest energy into their lessons, a student likewise will gain little enrichment.…

The best thing a tutor can do is to understand the hardships as a student, compared to teachers, having recently completed some of these courses, we can provide some tips and hacks to help students learn and excel. I am very patient and has studied through multiple programs, I am also multilingual which helps me in communicating with some other…

To me, a tutor is someone that can not only prepare a student in the classroom but to prepare them for life. Learning skills allow for the child to develop their own interests and pursue them further beyond the idea of exams and tests. I hope that my valuable skills allow for students to become high achievers, both in the academic situation and…

One of the most important things would be the environment the tutor and student are in. The more comfortable but slightly stressed-out the students are, the more productive the tutoring session would be. Another essential aspect of tutoring would be the ability for the tutor to deeply understand the concept themselves in order for them to simplify…

I believe a tutor can uplift the confidence of a student by encouraging him/her every step of the way which will benefit the students in their future. I would say breaking down a complex matter into a simpler solution so that the concept is easier to grasp for the students. Making the lessons easier by using storytelling as examples when the…

In my view, the paramount role of a tutor is to cultivate a learning environment filled with patience and empathy. By recognising the challenges students may encounter along their learning journey and demonstrating empathy towards these obstacles, a positive and supportive environment is created between the student and tutor. This allows me to…

I believe that a successful tutor is a tutor that capable to make their students become more confident. The students need to believe in themselves in order to make a better progress in their studying. And in order to do so, the tutor need to inspire the students as much as helping them with answering questions My strengths are: 1. Really patient…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with a good foundation of knowledge so that they can build up and improve their academic result from that. Besides, the tutor is responsible for constantly building confidence so that the student can believe in their abilities to solve tough problems. When they…

Once, I heard a wise thing on the internet, "You should demand more from yourself, not from anyone else, or anything." Ever since, I find myself sticking to this thing to push those I am tutoring. Also, tutoring facilitates individualized attention, through which we as a tutor can provide more guidance, and support to get most out of the…

Personally, when I was a student the most important effect of good teachers and tutors was regaining confidence in myself. They showed me that it was okay to fail, how to bounce back, and how to learn from my mistakes. Having a strong education is a wonderful thing, but having been through the whole K-12-Uni-Workforce pipeline by far the best…

The most important thing as a tutor is to help students connect to what they are learning. It is the job of the tutor to differentiate instruction based on the learning preferences of the students. Tutors must have a solid passion to teach, including taking time to understand different ways to teach or provide content, or developing their own skills to allow students to understand a subject. A tutor should aim to see improved results provided the student puts work in to improve. Seeing results can develop encouragement and self-fulfilment…

I had a tutor in high school for my VCE studies. I learned that a tutor must be a supportive figure that guides their student with compassion and patience. The demeanor of my tutor relived the stress of studying and gave me the confidence to attempt difficult problems that I would have given up on. Students at any year level will often feel…

Inside KingsgroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex worked on identifying and extending number patterns as well as solving addition and subtraction problems using practical examples.

Year 7 student Olivia tackled fraction concepts, including comparing fractions of different denominators, and practised rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Marcus focused on two-step algebraic equations and applied formulas to calculate circumference, using targeted textbook exercises for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student avoided showing working, instead "drawing out algebra questions to understand what the question is asking," which made it harder to catch and correct missteps.

A Year 8 student mixed up area and volume in geometry word problems by jumping straight to answers before reading fully—this often led to confusion when units changed mid-question.

Another in Year 10 struggled with index laws and was advised to improve note organization: "organising all math work in a neat manner, including tutoring worksheets and notes." Missed steps meant errors went unnoticed until revision time.

Recent Achievements

One Kingsgrove tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who had always hesitated with multi-step algebra now working through wordier questions almost entirely on his own, no longer waiting for hints before starting.

A Year 11 student, previously quick to guess at answers in geometry, is now pausing to write out each calculation step before substituting values into formulas—a big shift from her earlier rush.

In primary, one Year 4 learner who used to rely on counting fingers has started tackling simple subtraction mentally and will even try times tables without prompting. Last session, he completed all ten problems in his head without reaching for his hands once.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bexley North Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Ursula's College.
