The most important things that a tutor can do for a student that always actively listen to a student and understand lives they live. I do believe that my strengths as a tutor are building strong, personal relationships with students and having specific content expertise. As roughly 2 years providing one-on-one sessions, to what I have learned…

Something I believe is important is fostering a passion within the student for the subject, being the reason why someone starts to like something, become passionate, and work hard from their heart rather than from external sources. I would love to help students find genuine interest in Maths and Chemistry as much as I did. I try experimenting with…

A tutor should identify the students' areas of weakness and focus on helping the students gain knowledge in these areas rather than teaching the student what they already know. When you toss your fishing line into the water, you may have to wait hours to catch your first fish. When caring for a plant, you must water it frequently for several…

A tutor's job is to fuel their students' love for learning, make them independent, and lend them a hand when it is needed. A tutor has to be available for a student and has to be a concrete source of education. I am capable of explaining a concept to students in multiple different ways, which directly aids their understanding. I am very…

I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be fully committed to them while fully giving the student their attention while teaching. Furthermore, I believe that a tutor has to prepare themselves very well before a lesson and bring multiple techniques with them in order to make sure that the student can fully grasp an…

I think an important role tutor must be able to do is to be able to adaptable in their teaching style to cater to the needs of students. Additionally being relatable and exploring how this knowledge can be expanded to world wide applications. I believe tutors need to make strong relationships with both students in order for them to feel…

Tutors can provide a one-on-one situation where they're able to realise the students weaknesses and target those areas. They can also be someone else for the students to ask questions where they may be too shy or unable to during a large classroom environment. Tutoring can also help reinforce content that students learnt that day or week. I am a…

As stated above it is important for a tutor to be patient and understanding of others. This would allow for a tutor to be adaptive in their teaching, altering the method of teaching content in order to assist a student's understanding. A tutor must be able to develop and understand a student. A student will need to understand the concept themselves and it is our job to assist them to understand any issues that arise in their development. To put it simply, tutors are guides and the student is the captain. Therefore we must be able to resonate with each student and treat each one…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is guide them. What i mean by guiding them is correcting simple mistakes so that they would learn from them and remember not to make the same mistake again. I found that by making a mistake it was a lot easier to remember the correct method after being helped by my teacher. Simlarly promoting…

I think a tutor can most importantly help a student with the concepts that they are struggling with in school and also helping students learn concepts that their school hasn't gone through yet so that once they do, it'll be revision for them rather than learning it for the first time. This particularly helped me when I was doing my HSC.…

The most important criteria to be a tutor is being on time to the class. This is the basic commitment if you have the compassion as a tutor . I am really…

Ultimately, a tutor must teach his/her student to be able to rely on themselves and think autonomously when problem solving i.e. not to be afraid of trial and error. I am extremely happy with Nicky's tutoring. She instantly developed a lovely rapport with my daughter Bonnie. Nicky is very patient and great at explaining maths concepts in a way that is easy for Bonnie to understand. I am already seeing a much more positive attitude to maths in Bonnie and she feels more confident to do maths lessons at school. We got a good one!

Inside KirraweeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Jamie worked on adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers as well as using brackets within longer equations to break down multi-step problems.

For Year 9, Zoe focused on algebraic equations by solving for x and y, and also applied the concept of simple interest to practical questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lucas revised index laws with a focus on simplifying expressions involving indices, along with working through different types of algebraic terms in equations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, a student often rushed through multi-step problems in her head and skipped writing down working, which caused errors with working out in her head, according to one tutor.

In Year 11 Biology, another relied heavily on prompts for each sentence when structuring extended answers, slowing progress during exam-style tasks.

A Year 7 student came unprepared without their textbook; this led to time lost sourcing material instead of tackling new content.

Meanwhile, in Year 9 English, following self-made plans was an issue—plans were created but not actually followed during essay writing, so ideas became disorganized mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Kirrawee tutor noticed Sophie, a Year 10 student, now independently writes out all her algebraic working—something she avoided in the past—and accurately expands brackets without prompting.

Abbey in Year 9, who used to hesitate with percentages and financial maths, confidently calculated multi-step percentage problems on her own last week and even explained her reasoning aloud.

Meanwhile, Eloise (Year 8) showed new initiative by tackling mixed fraction addition questions solo; previously she needed step-by-step guidance but this time completed the set correctly before asking for feedback.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Miranda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kirrawee Public School.
