The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to be honest, collaborate in their learning journey, and give them learning strategies. Students benefit from having a tutor they trust who is honest with them on their current strengths and weaknesses and who also inspires confidence that the weaknesses can be overcome. Collaboration with…

I believe it’s important for tutors to create a supportive environments for students. This will allow them to feel comfortable and open to learning. Learning is almost impossible in an environment where students do no feel safe. I also think it’s important for tutors to give students the opportunity to share their learning to encourage active…

Guidance. It's always guidance. Tutors facilitate learning and help activates students' potential. :) Tutors receive all the questions most of the students don't ask in class, and I find it amazing because real learning happens between tutors and students. I already know how to handle them and I can give excellent activities that they can enjoy…

The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

To give them the tools to understand their own way of thinking. One subject tends to have its tendrils in other fields, give the student the key to one, and hopefully they will find the analogous keys to others. I try to break down ideas to people in simpler ways. Often information tends to be presented in an unorganised manner at least in the…

Inside Lake GardensTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sophie worked through solving linear simultaneous equations using substitution and revisited circle mensuration with step-by-step diagrams.

For Year 11, Daniel focused on trigonometry—specifically SOH CAH TOA and both the sine and cosine rules—and practiced finding unknown sides in right-angled triangles using calculators.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack tackled proof by contradiction and mathematical induction, applying these logical proofs to algebraic statements drawn from recent classwork.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working through mathematical induction and negated statements showed ongoing confusion, with a tutor noting "a formal session going over it" was needed—misunderstandings here made subsequent problem-solving slower and more frustrating.

In Year 9, one learner tended to jump to answers in algebra without double-checking or clearly showing working; as the tutor observed, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Meanwhile, a primary student hesitated to write out solutions for worded fraction problems unless fully confident in the answer. This led to blank responses on tests and missed opportunities for targeted feedback.

Recent Achievements

A Lake Gardens tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from hesitating over exponent laws to independently solving equations with non-standard layouts, needing only minimal hints.

In a senior session, another student who previously struggled to form equations on their own began confidently applying the quadratic formula after practicing setting up problems themselves.

Meanwhile, during a primary session, one younger learner shifted from frequent mistakes in array-based fraction exercises to reliably grouping and counting out correct answers—now checking her work methodically by matching dots rather than guessing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wendouree Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wendouree Primary School.
