One of the most important things an english tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being…

Building the student's confidence and knowledge are the two key aspects of being an english tutor that I have found during my experience. Nothing is more important than a student feeling they can combat the work which is put in front of them. I can be flexible and work with the strengths and weaknesses of my students. I am extremely organised…

A tutor should always motivate a student to have a specific goal and want to work towards it. Tutors must inspire their students to strive to achieve and to dream of a future where they are successful. Being organised is crucial. Giving a student time to reflect on what they have learned, by spending time during a lesson explaining their…

A tutor can inspire and instill self belief/self esteem back into a student. A tutor can motivate students to study hard and receive good marks. When students receive good marks the student gains self esteem and confidence and ultimately happiness (which akes tutoring very rewarding). A tutor can be a good role model and show students not only the…

I would consider an ongoing \'positive reinforcement and encouragement\' to student is crucial for their success. Students love to be motivated in learning and they love to feel loved and supported in their learning journey. We as tutors are not just there to teach them what to do, but as their motivators to guide and encourage, so that they can…

I believe that tutors need to not only teach topics to students, but they must also be able to build the students confidence in their progress. Learning must be interesting and engaging as students must enjoy the process of learning for them to fully understand the topics as they will only peform well in engaging discussions. Adapting to the…

I strongly believe that an english tutor's role is to build their students' confidence in taking control of their learning. This could be by encouraging them to approach difficult tasks or helping them design their study schedule. My goal is to become a resource for my students rather than a teacher and my overall purpose is to leave students in a…

I believe the most important thing an english tutor can do is help a student feel safe and confident in their learning journey. Being in leadership, I've seen how powerful encouragement and trust can be in helping someone grow. A tutor shouldn't just teach content, they should motivate, reassure, and create a space where students aren't afraid to…

A tutor needs to be understanding, and respectful. They must realise that students don't all learn at the same pace and thus must be able to maintain the learning pace with their student. They must also be respectful that student's are trying their best and must not be too pushing and must remain patient with their student. I am knowledgable in…

To learn the nature of the student's mind and how their brain processes information, so that a lesson plan can be tailored to their specific needs. Inside LalorTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Aiden completed an assessment and then focused on understanding decimals, using number lines to help visualise place value.

Year 8 student Emily worked through linear relations, including finding gradients and x- and y-intercepts, followed by graphing equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Jason prepared for his exam by practising algebraic techniques such as simplifying algebraic fractions and working with perfect squares and the difference of squares.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student hesitated to attempt harder algebra questions, giving up quickly when unsure—"too many times he has just given up when the question is too hard or he does not understand it." This reluctance meant missed opportunities to develop resilience and left gaps in understanding, especially with worded problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 biology student struggled to summarise processes like mitosis and meiosis; lack of interest made recall difficult and diagrams incomplete.

In Year 4 maths, one child often skipped drawing graphs properly when tired, resulting in messy work that made later revision confusing and less effective.

Recent Achievements

One Lalor tutor noticed a real shift in Priya's approach to her high school maths—she now remembers to label units in geometry problems, something she often overlooked before, and tackles simultaneous equations confidently using both substitution and elimination methods.

Another high school student who used to get stuck on worded algebra questions has begun deciphering them independently after a few guided examples, moving from hesitation to self-correction during sessions.

Meanwhile, Sophie (primary) improved her times tables speed dramatically, dropping from 41 seconds to just 31, and now carefully checks tricky ones instead of rushing through.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lalor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Peter Lalor Secondary College.
