In my view, the most important things a tutor can do is to build a positive relationship with a student which is the key to become an effective teacher. This is important because it is impossible to engage a student into learning without building a positive rapport with them. The other important thing is to always encourage them to keep trying and…

I think being more practical, by being more open. By explaining problems with examples of real life, with things they already know and have seen. I think helping them with the home work related problems and also giving them a problem or two to solve from the teaching of the day. Simple things like repetitive recalling and revising can also do…

Understanding what the student does not understand, eg. is the topic too boring, are they just tired, are they having a bad day or is it a lack of concentration. Being empathetic and making sure the student student feels right about learning the topic. Being a friend to my student, not putting too much on the plate of them, understanding that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide them a safe space where they can ask you about any problem without a hesitation and communicate in a way that makes the learner feel motivated, enthusiastic and confident in their ability to master and enjoy whatever challenges come along. I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I love to be with children and sometimes be like them and enjoy the life in a simple manner. This really makes a great bond between me and my students due to which…

The most important thing is to drive their learning process and help them understand key concepts through a medium conducive to their learning style. Its also by creating a safe environment where the student feels like they can ask you any question without fear, as this sometimes is not possible in a classroom or group setting I am very patient,…

i believe a tutor has to have a solid understanding of all content to provide the best support to a student, has to be patient, must know a range of way to approach a question, and must be readily available to answer questions through online or in person, and a tutor should be friendly and willing to have fun with the lesson so as it doesn't…

I feel making a student at ease and making a atmosphere where they can ask any of their query without any hesitance is the most important thing. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to have them gain confidence with themselves in terms of excelling in school. I think this confidence is important in not just getting high marks in quizzes and tests, but I believe that being confident will help them long-term in solving problems not just in school, even though…

Teach them how to think for themselves and how to be critical of any situation so that they may find answers on their own. Teach them that values are more important than success in life. The most important role of a tutor is to transform a student’s mindset. Beyond teaching content, I aim to impart a genuine passion for the subject and build the self-belief that they are capable of mastering it. When a student stops saying 'I can't do this' and starts asking 'How do I solve this?', that is real success. As an Engineering Masters…

I believe a tutor can impact student's lives by providing the foundation he needs for further studies. A student with a poor concept might some how pass but he will struggle in the future, or looses interest in that subject. Hence a tutor can strengthen that foundation, at the same time be a source of motivation and a be a big brother. My main…

A successful teacher never lets a student feel like they cannot achieve their goals. The goal can be anything from solving a problem to passing the course or even their career goals. A tutor should have a great deal of empathy to be able to understand what the student is going through in order to understand why they are experiencing difficulties to help them solve a problem. I had a tutor in high school for my VCE studies. I learned that a tutor must be a supportive figure that guides their student with compassion and patience. The demeanor of my tutor relived the stress of studying and gave me the confidence to attempt difficult problems that I would have given up on. Students at any year level will often feel…

Inside LansdowneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Zoe practised division and fractions, with extra focus on understanding decimals and recognising 3D shapes using clues.

For Year 10, Jasmine worked through expanding and factorising algebraic equations as well as revision of quadratic problems from classwork.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Michael tackled cumulative frequency graphs and calculated regression lines for bivariate data using real examples to build statistical analysis skills.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student hesitated to attempt complex indices problems, often skipping harder parts—"she tends to avoid the multi-step indices questions," noted one tutor, which meant fewer opportunities to practice linking concepts under pressure.

In Year 9 algebra, incomplete back-checking of fraction addition steps led to small sign errors persisting across similar questions.

A primary student's missed homework left gaps in times tables recall, so new division skills felt shaky and unfamiliar.

For another Year 8 learner, messy working in volume problems made it tough to trace errors or clarify which formula was being applied at each step.

Recent Achievements

A Lansdowne tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with HSC financial mathematics now confidently solved compound interest and quadratic equation problems independently.

Another high schooler, after struggling with complex algebraic equations, showed new initiative by applying substitution techniques up to fourth-order factorisation without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, Zoe—who once needed frequent help with division—was able to write her own division sentences using arrays and tackled most questions on her own, only occasionally checking in for guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.
