A tutor must be able to understand the student's perspective. Students think in unique ways and a good tutor should encourage that level of thinking. A tutor must also be equipped enough to answer any out-of-syllabus questions that students may have. A good tutor should encourage an inquisitive mindset among their students. I strive to do these…

The most valuable duty of a tutor is to focus on the holistic development of a student, allowing them to be persistent, independent and problem-solving to tackle any academic or life challenge. My strengths are my simplistic and analogy-based approach to explaining concepts, and my emphasis on exam technique that allows students to feel…

As a tutor, the highest priority to students to teach them to understand the motivations and purpose of study. Though understanding course content is important in its own right, I believe learning to learn, critical thinking, and structuring arguments are the skills that stick with the student past high school and into university and the…

Education is very important in today's societies, many parents hire tutors to help their children catch up or keep up in school subjects where they are having difficulties and have fallen behind their peers. Tutors can help a student in one or many subjects depending upon the child’s needs and the tutor’s expertise. "My strength is my…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. Every student has the capability of doing better in every aspect of their lives if provided with personalized training that takes into account their strengths and weaknesses. I believe that my deep understanding of the foundational level of subjects is…

I strongly believe the student should be interested in the subject. And I think, it is the role of the tutor to create that interest. The tutor's success is similar to that of a doctor. You succeed when you are no longer needed. I am a student and understand very well the issues students face when doing sums and exams. I believe I have mastered…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to be able to listen, provide feedback that the student is able to take on hand and to create an efficient learning environment. To listen to a student's goals, what they are having difficulty with and how to improve upon these difficulties - are very crucial in the role…

I can build my students engagement with and appreciation of the subject (many students find school boring or purposeless and I make a point to spark more joy in learning by integrating key notes of relevance into every lesson). Maintain a positive attitude, take away the stress from learning, guide them and restructure their approach to studying when they come across roadblocks. Besides this it is essential that the tutor has good notes, visual ques, easy acronyms and memorization strategies, probes the student to think on their own and create a curiosity and interest in…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clear explanations, foster confidence, and encourage independent thinking. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

I believe the most important thing is to make sure the student fully understands the knowledge, being able to use it in any situation, while enjoying the learning. It is when the student fully engages in their learning experience that the outcome can be fully maximised. I wish this upon all students, and I would love to be the mentor who guides…

Inside Lavender BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ava worked through challenging Maths Olympiad questions, revisited area of triangles with decimal and fraction multiplication, and practised finding unknown values using diagrams.

Year 8 student Mia focused on properties of quadrilaterals and triangles by applying congruency tests to homework problems, and briefly reviewed composite area questions from her school set.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Liam revised trigonometry ratios and tackled exam-style problems involving sine rule and non-right angled triangles for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 mathematics, hesitation to attempt problem-solving questions—especially those involving algebra—sometimes led to deferring to decimals instead. "She seemed slightly hesitant to attempt the problem solving questions involving algebraic techniques," noted a tutor.

In a senior revision session, one student focused mainly on teacher-provided easy exercises and avoided more challenging graphing and congruency proofs, missing key opportunities for deeper learning.

Another high schooler's layout in geometry made it difficult to spot calculation errors until the end, slowing progress.

After setbacks or mistakes, reluctance to review test papers limited understanding of where improvements were needed most.

Recent Achievements

A Lavender Bay tutor recently saw a Year 10 student achieve a much higher Olympiad result than before, thanks to better time management and the ability to quickly review her mistakes—something she struggled with previously.

In Year 12, Charlie, who once hesitated with quadratic functions, now rapidly factors three-term equations and uses the quadratic formula independently.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, Xander has started solving division problems on his own using small toys for groups and even mastered multiplication facts like 4 × 3 without relying on his table for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cameragal Montessori School, North Sydney Campus.
