I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students, is to be their friends. It helps providing the students an environment where they can enjoy what they are studying. I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s understanding, confidence, and independence. A tutor should not only help students answer specific questions, but also guide them in developing problem-solving skills and effective ways of thinking. I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

Adapt to their needs. As a tutor, your job is to assist in their learning experience, and get growth from the student. There is no one way to teach that is effective for everyone. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build the student’s confidence, not just help them get the answer. Efficient, personalised and great value. We had an awesome experience in 2022 and EzyMath have come to the party again this year with an equally good tutor!
Simon Rudd, Leichhardt

Inside LeichhardtTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zoe focused on two-digit multiplication and basic short division, then practised converting improper fractions to mixed numerals and adding fractions with the same denominators.

In Year 7, Ethan worked through solving one- and two-step linear equations and revised Pythagoras' theorem using right-angled triangle problems.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Lara strengthened her understanding of laws of indices by tackling index notation questions and reviewed fundamental trigonometry concepts including sine, cosine, and tangent ratios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Mathematics, one student's work on plotting coordinates was "a bit messy," making it harder to identify errors and slowing down corrections during lessons.

A Year 10 learner preparing for trigonometry assessments struggled to remember the SOH CAH TOA rule without written notes—she relied on prompts instead of independent recall.

Meanwhile, in a Year 6 session, confusion converting between square centimetres and square metres persisted; repeated mistakes were not always revisited, so misconceptions lingered into revision tasks.

During primary times tables review, incomplete daily practice meant non-calculator sections remained stressful rather than automatic.

Recent Achievements

A Leichhardt tutor noticed Makayla, a high school student, has started to independently identify which trigonometric ratio (sine, cosine, or tangent) to use—something she previously hesitated with unless prompted.

In another session, Hermione (Year 9) made a clear shift by slowing down and working more neatly after earlier lessons flagged her tendency for rushed errors; this time she completed all sums correctly without careless mistakes.

Meanwhile, Maya in Year 5 showed new persistence by tackling tricky multiplication problems on her own and only asking for hints when truly stuck, finishing an entire worksheet with minimal guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Inner West Council Library and History Leichhardt Branch—or at your child's school (with permission), like Leichhardt Public School.
