To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

I think communication is one of the most crucial skills. I believe every students, somehow, are capable of learning. So even though I don't have extraordinary skills to teach them, they will learn from my explanation. But I have to know where they are at the point of time to know exactly what and how I have to teach. Having an idea of what my…

A tutor needs to inspire the students in such a way that they know what their efforts will make them accomplish. A very few teachers are able to provide the contextual applications of what they teach the students. I believe it is paramount that a student know about WHY he is being taught something. Sparking interest in studies is not easy at times…

In my opinion the most important thing a teacher can do for a Student is to make a Educational related understanding with the student. As in my case I make sure the student clear his idea and he/she is not shy to ask more questions. I take tutoring as my Passion so I do not move to the next idea/topic if my student did not understand the previous…

It is important that a tutor understand the student's learning style. It allows them to teach efficiently while making learning as fun as possible. I am a fast learner which allows me to easily adapt to new challenges. I also believe myself to be a meticulous person. Once I start a job, I will be thorough in preparation and completion. I am also…

Help a student gain the confidence needed to know what they need to do in studying for a subject, as well as the desire to succeed in that area, knowing that they can with the required commitment. Focusing on what a student needs to most efficiently improve their grade, rather than wasting time, so as to provide the most value possible in a short…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student can vary, depending on the student. For e.g I had a friend who's outlook on maths was very negative, he had despised it his whole life and every time we'd have maths h would just have a frown upon his face and his mood would change. I assumed this was because he had never really…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to become independent. I would say that tutoring is only a temporary solution to their academic problems. If they are going to enter a university, get a real job or did not have enough money to pay for tutoring services, I would want them to learn on their own. A time would…

I believe tutors have the potential to really change a students attitude and opinion of school, a great tutor will not only teach a subject but teach a student to enjoy the subject through sharing with the student the things that make the subject enjoyable to them, and this has the potential to totally change a students academic life. I have been…

I think that the most important things that a tutor can do for a student would be to inspire them to love the subjects that they take and study, to be able to inspire them to do their work and really work at it in their own time, such that the tutoring isn't a dependency but a supplement to their success. Once that's achieved, it becomes much…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to make learning feel simple, build the student's confidence, and support them at their own pace. I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

Explaining in the simplistic way that a student can understand. If you can not explain it in simple terms it means you do not understand it. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is affirm their self-worth as a learner and as an individual. It's certainly not an easy task learning…

Teach them how to think for themselves and how to be critical of any situation so that they may find answers on their own. Teach them that values are more important than success in life. Inside Linley PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and address challenging question types, while Year 8 student Ethan worked through linear equations and interpreting graphs by constructing number sets from worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby focused on algebraic manipulation—multiplying and dividing terms—and practiced simplifying complex expressions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student forgot to bring required test materials and relied heavily on a calculator, missing out on vital non-calculator skills—"she needs to work on being able to do calculations without a calculator."

In Year 10 algebra, a reluctance to put logic on paper meant errors went unnoticed until feedback was given.

For a Year 8 student, disorganized working when breaking down composite numbers made factorization tasks harder than necessary.

Meanwhile, in primary years, skipping written steps during division led one student to make mistakes that "could have been avoided if workings were shown clearly."

Recent Achievements

One Linley Point tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get lost in algebra now confidently tackles simultaneous equations, even switching between substitution and elimination methods without prompting.

In Year 11, another student who'd previously rushed through answers is now carefully laying out solutions step by step, catching her own errors—especially with trigonometry questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner has shifted from guessing at worded division problems to reading them independently and explaining her reasoning before working out the answer. Last session, she solved three tricky word problems on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill High School.
