Firstly, I feel a tutor should make a student feel comfortable and trusted such that the latter never hesitates to ask a question and clear his/her doubts. Also, a student should feel that the tutor is genuinely interested in his/her progress and thus, I feel a student remains motivated and does his/her best. I believe that I have the patience and…

It is important to raise the student's interest in study as interest is the premise for the student to invest time and effort. What is also important is that the tutor teach the student approaches and techniques to study, not only what's in the textbook. I also consider it prudent for tutors to have patience with students and to be…

The most important thing is identifying strengths, weaknesses and comfort zone of the student. The teacher in the comfort zone of student should help student work on his weaknesses and help the student identify his own strengths/passion and help him pursue it. This can also be summarized in a saying by a famous poet khalil Gibran on…

It is most important for a tutor to engage with the student, so that they will be more inclined to be attentive and take the lessons seriously. It is also neccesary to make the neccesary preperations required for the student, e.g background research for foreign topics/ or remodled questions, to suit the student's needs and allow for efficient…

Meet them where they are, not where you expect them to be. A lot of students come in already feeling like they're bad at the subject, so the priority is rebuilding their confidence first. Getting the right answer matters, but getting the student to believe they can get the right answer matters more. My maths background gives me a strong command of…

A tutor has to understand about what kind of learner his/her student is. As the student could be visual learner, a kinesthetic learner, or just an auditory learner, the teacher has to use appropriate teaching methods. I can explain concepts clearly. A tutor can show students how challenging questions are done and prepare them well for their exams/tests. Plus, encourage them to put in their full potential to score well in exams. I am free to explain any concept, numerous times until the student has really understood. My job is to make sure they know what they are actually doing. I try to give…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them and remind them of their potential. Constant mentoring and motivation goes a long way in maximising students' academic performance. Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

Tutors are just not there to help students with their students. Their most important role is to be friends and be able to guide their students in the right direction. If tutors become friends, the students listen and trust them more. Of course this does not mean that students can take tutors for a ride. As a tutor I am hardworking, diligent and…

Inside Linley PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Georgia reviewed her recent NAPLAN paper to identify and address challenging question types, while Year 8 student Ethan worked through linear equations and interpreting graphs by constructing number sets from worded problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ruby focused on algebraic manipulation—multiplying and dividing terms—and practiced simplifying complex expressions to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student forgot to bring required test materials and relied heavily on a calculator, missing out on vital non-calculator skills—"she needs to work on being able to do calculations without a calculator."

In Year 10 algebra, a reluctance to put logic on paper meant errors went unnoticed until feedback was given.

For a Year 8 student, disorganized working when breaking down composite numbers made factorization tasks harder than necessary.

Meanwhile, in primary years, skipping written steps during division led one student to make mistakes that "could have been avoided if workings were shown clearly."

Recent Achievements

One Linley Point tutor noticed a Year 9 student who used to get lost in algebra now confidently tackles simultaneous equations, even switching between substitution and elimination methods without prompting.

In Year 11, another student who'd previously rushed through answers is now carefully laying out solutions step by step, catching her own errors—especially with trigonometry questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner has shifted from guessing at worded division problems to reading them independently and explaining her reasoning before working out the answer. Last session, she solved three tricky word problems on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunters Hill High School.
