I think giving a student support and encouragement is extremely important as well as making things clear for students. Too often, students feel overwhelmed at the prospect of new, hard concepts, and simplifying the concepts and supporting students through this, enables them to achieve success. I think I am good at giving space for a student to try…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student are act as a mentor and show genuine commitment to their goals. I believe that as a tutor, it's not just about achieving temporary marks but rather teaching principles that students can apply throughout their schooling journey and in general life. I consider commitment to be…

I think the most important thing s tutor can do for a student is explain the content well allowing for them to understand. This means not handing the answers to them on a silver platter, I believe that doing this has no help to the students. In order to be an efficient Tudor one must go through all the steps of the content. I like to think that I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to listen and create a safe space for the student. When tutors don't listen it'll be a waste of time for both parties. This can be very hard because sometimes students may not be able to pinpoint what they don't understand or they might just feel a bit embarrassed. This is where…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be encouraging and have faith in the student. Personally, when I used to have tutors, I performed the best when they reiterated, “you can do it! it’s not about the brain you were born with, it’s about how far you’re willing to go in terms of dedication and hard work,†and that stuck with me.…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make them feel comfortable and to help them feel like learning is not a chore but a good experience. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are inspire and impart. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instil a sense of confidence with whatever it is they are doing. Rosemary Peppard, Little Bay

Inside Little BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ethan practiced multiplying and dividing fractions, then moved on to solving perimeter and area problems for composite shapes using diagrams.

For Year 8, Olivia worked through expanding algebraic brackets and applied these skills to more complex equations, with a focus on clear setting out of her working.

In Year 10, Sam reviewed trigonometry concepts including the sine and cosine rules, reinforcing understanding by tackling exam-style questions involving real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 maths, one student's written work was still messy and hard to follow, making it difficult to spot calculation errors when tackling fractions.

A Year 10 student delayed sharing assessment deadlines until the last minute; as a tutor noted, "their assessment was due that very day," which left no time for targeted support.

In senior English, another student received feedback but only made minimal changes to reading comprehension tasks rather than addressing the core suggestions. This meant valuable strategies weren't applied before practice exams.

Recent Achievements

A Little Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to freeze up at simultaneous equations now working through them independently, even explaining her steps aloud without prompting.

In another session, a Year 8 student who had trouble remembering formulas began recalling key content and could apply it in new problems with little hesitation.

Meanwhile, a primary school student—who was previously reluctant to ask questions—started openly admitting when he felt stuck and asked for help on tricky perimeter challenges. Last week, he finished all ten practice problems on his own after seeking guidance just once.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like La Perouse Public School.
