I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s confidence, provide clear explanations, and encourage good study habits. While also being persistent and ensuring that students truly understand the concepts and learn from their mistakes to become better. A tutor should also support students academically while also…

Listen. Students often feel overwhelmed and are unable to understand content because they don’t feel they are truly being listened to - something I relate to as a former student, and can easily combat by employing listening as paramount. I am incredibly patient and able to vary my methods of communication to connect with divergent personalities.…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student include: Being able to communicate to the student in a way which their brain can understand the content best such as visually for example. Secondly being patient is a key factor because you dont want the student to be stressed or anxious but want them to be calm and…

I think it's a question of what a tutor can BE rather than do. I found in my experience that I always responded to teachers who were enthusiastic and portrayed a genuine care for the learning of the student. In a metaphorical sense, the tutor must think like a student in an empathetic way rather than merely be a one way stream of instruction. If a…

Finding out whether a student is a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner is important. By discovering how the student learns best, I believe he will be able to reach his true potential. To do this, a tutor must be malleable in his teaching methods and communication. Furthermore, it is crucial that the tutor and student create a bond that reaches…

One important thing a tutor can do is clearly understand what a student wants with their tutor. For example, if a student already know concepts really well, a tutor should be able to identify this and spend more time on areas where a student may struggle. Furthermore, it is important to consider the student first and foremost. A tutor should be…

Students need to acquire confidence in their ability to complete questions and demonstrate this whenever possible rather than listening to the tutor just explain…

I believe the three most important things I could do for a student is academic support, addressing study habits and confronting weaknesses. I believe focusing on these three aspects will do the upmost for the student in the short and long term. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their understanding, confidence, and independence. A tutor should explain concepts clearly, adapt to the student’s learning style, and create a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions. Ultimately, the goal is not just to help them with…

Inside LugarnoTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Harry practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages and reviewed Pythagoras' theorem and early algebra topics.

In Year 8, Jessica focused on solving linear equations and word problems as well as applying index laws using worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Max tackled differentiation and integration questions for upcoming trial exams, with extra attention to calculus techniques through targeted practice problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student repeatedly relied on "test yourself" questions instead of tackling harder challenge problems in trigonometry, which limited exposure to unfamiliar scenarios—"decided to change from challenge questions as they were quite difficult."

In Year 7, a learner's maths book showed unclear working and messy layout, making it tough to spot where sign errors crept in.

At the senior level, one Year 12 student hesitated with integration and differentiation because he sometimes confused which method was needed; this led to wasted time reworking problems under exam pressure.

Missed opportunities for self-led revision also meant forgotten rules resurfaced during assessments.

Recent Achievements

A Lugarno tutor recently noticed a Year 12 student who'd been struggling with harder integration questions now working through them independently, often getting answers right without hints and even tackling new probability problems with more confidence than before.

In Year 10, another student who previously mixed up which operation to use in linear equations is now consistently choosing the correct method and solving for x accurately.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to guess when unsure has started raising their hand to ask for help as soon as they're stuck, leading to quicker understanding during sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oatley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lugarno Public School.
