A tutor should understand a student's struggle and achievements, and be able to bring out the fun in studying to help them in their academic struggles. I encourage and motivate students to excel and set a foundation for future studies, as well as providing an entertaining and educational environment suitable for each student. As a current student…

The most important thing is to be patient and understanding of the student. I believe that in order to teach efficiently, those two core values must be practiced first for the student to truly engage and advance in the learning material. Contrastingly, in a practical sense, the most important thing we can do is to ensure the student understands…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make him/her confident in their own abilities. Children tend to lose confidence in themselves if they achieve low grades, but I want to be able to teach kids in a way where they enjoy learning and also look forward to each session. I plan on doing this by incorporating relatable examples and…

I believe that a safe and welcoming learning environment is more important as it ensures a student will get the most out of their learning experience. If there is an environment which welcomes questions and challenging areas which an individual may be less comfortable with, it can assist one with reaching their full potential and making learning…

I believe that the most important thing about a tutor is their ability to motivate and encourage a student in their learning journey. A tutor must be able to show enthusiasm and positivity towards learning, and rather than using rote learning techniques, to engage the student so that they can demonstrate longevity in their education. It is…

Enable the student to find their method of learning and their own logic patterns to be able to work out complex problems with simple methods My strengths as a tutor are the ability to identify with the child and through that, enable them to simplify their learning. There are a variety of things that makes a tutor stand out and become a real teacher. One is to let the student feel comfortable enough for them to ask questions that they might feel is a basic question. Instilling confidence in them to explore without hesitation and fear is important in the students development. This will help them face their own…

Since this is a 1-on-1 tutorial, the tutor must give full attention to the student. Also to find ways to make sessions enjoyable but not to the point of sacrificing the time for teaching. And again to be patient so that the student can fully understand the topics being discussed. My best quality as a tutor would be my patience. I know a lot of…

Study the student and know his or her pros and cons. I would say master the pros whilst teaching the pros. Divide the activities and show the student that learning isn't a burden its much of a relief at the end of the day because goals can be reached easier once you know better. Be there for the student when they need help, and never losing patience with them. Students need reassurance that they will always have someone to help them no matter how 'silly' they think their questions are and won't be judged. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand that each student is different and learns best in different ways and at different paces. I also firmly believe that engaging the student by doing things like connecting concepts to the real world or even to the student's own interests is paramount for the overall retention…

Inside Lysterfield SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jack worked through algebraic manipulation and the multiplication rules for indices, focusing on practice problems to build fluency.

Year 10 student Emily explored quadratic expressions and equations, including solving by factorisation and using examples from her textbook.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on one-variable statistics—summarising data sets and constructing box plots and histograms using her calculator to interpret real data.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Mathematics, one student skipped completing all chapter questions and struggled to use the CAS calculator efficiently during timed tasks—"must practice using the calculator to improve timing."

In another VCE context, a student avoided reviewing SAC errors or identifying weak areas, leading to repeated uncertainty in assessments.

A Year 8 learner relied on guessing answers without showing reasoning in worded problems, which left gaps unaddressed.

For a Year 4 maths session, missing focus led to forgotten subtraction steps with carry overs; as one tutor observed, "she tended to forget subtraction with carry overs," causing calculation errors that slowed progress.

Recent Achievements

One Lysterfield South tutor noticed a big change with a Year 10 student who had struggled to connect theory with practice in algebra; now, he's independently rearranging equations and can explain why each step matters, instead of just following along.

In Year 7 maths, another student used to guess at negative number problems but recently started pausing to check her logic before answering—she even asked for more challenging questions last session.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who found fractions confusing is now confidently identifying equivalent fractions on number lines and quickly shaded the correct parts without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Endeavour Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Maranatha Christian School.
