The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to allow them to build up their own confidence in the subject that they are struggling in, as well as allowing them not to see the subject as a chore or something to avoid, but as an enjoyable and fun task that would be highly useful for the future! My strengths are that I would always find…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give their best effort to explain the subject while still letting the student have a chance at engaging with the subejct matter. This is because students in my opinion tend to learn better from the encouragement that they recieve upon engagement to the material. I think that…

Giving a student the tools necessary to progress in the subject by himself whilst also being kind and patient. Giving just questions and answers can be done by his teacher for free, so tutors should give that extra mile. The various ways i can put a question. The one big thing about a hard question is some people might not understand it, so having…

Show them the way without giving the answer. I feel the downfall of most tutors is giving answers and not letting the students make mistakes so that they can learn from them. Tutors should be almost like your best friend rather than your teacher and should be working with you, not telling you. I'm approachable, professional, and have an excellent…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to find a way to engage them and encourage them to succeed in their studies. To help them actually see that they're getting better, and keep them motivated to continue working the best they can. I am a patient person with a relaxed demeanour. I can understand that each student…

Tutors work with students to guide their learning process, by personalising the content delivery in a way the child is able to respond to. This also incorporates the ability to motivate the child to learn, to believe in their own abilities and to strive to keeping persevering. I believe I have the necessary strength simply to push. I describe…

I think it is important for a tutor to act as a guide for a students learning, supporting them to develop tools and skills that work best for them and can be replicated in the classroom. Throughout my own school experience, I often had to approach tasks in different ways to what was standard or expected. I believe this reflects in my strengths as…

Be genuine; be genuine about knowing the information, be geuine about wanting to help and being genuinely concerned for their education. I am really good at explaining things to students, in lots of different ways if they dont understand. For a tutor, three key actions are crucial. First, they must create a safe space where students can openly discuss their struggles and request alternate explanations. Second, ongoing communication is essential, to ensure the curriculum is thoroughly covered and to pinpoint and understand weak areas. This allows students to ask for repeated or…

If a tutor can show a student how to truly learn and allow them to experience the feeling of learning, not only will that tutor help that student with a specific subject at a specific time but can also set them up to really put effort into learning throughout the rest of their lives, allowing them to reach their maximum potential in life no matter…

Inside Mahogany CreekTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Imogen practised reading and drawing picture graphs, then learned how to interpret the data shown.

Year 7 student Daniel focused on converting fractions, decimals, and percentages, as well as working through percentage problems using real-life examples.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Grace tackled simplifying algebraic expressions by combining like terms and applied the distributive property to expand brackets in equations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, a student avoided completing assigned homework and relied on the tutor to write responses for her instead of practicing writing herself. "She kept making excuses not to write," noted one tutor, which meant she missed valuable practice for upcoming assessments.

In Year 7 Maths, another student did not bring required equipment like a ruler or calculator, leading to delays during problem-solving tasks.

Meanwhile, in Year 10 Science, a student tried to use online resources during labelling activities rather than using memory, an approach that will not be permitted under test conditions—resulting in lost opportunities to build recall skills.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mahogany Creek recently noticed some strong steps forward across several year levels. One high school student, Ava, used to avoid asking questions about negative numbers, but this week she independently solved equations and explained the differences between positive and negative values without prompting.

Another older student, Luana, who had previously hesitated when tackling algebraic expressions, now rearranges and solves for variables on her own after a few focused sessions.

In primary, Addison—who often struggled with times tables out of sequence—was able to recall 3s and 4s correctly even when mixed up, finishing her worksheet with only one minor mistake.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mundaring Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Parkerville Primary School.
