I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

It definitely has to be creating passion within a student for a subject that they are struggling with. As a newly graduated student, I understand how crushing and demotivating a difficult subject can be. In addition, receiving tutoring in a subject you have no passion for, is terrible for their learning and mental health. Thus I think that the…

The most important thing to keep in mind when tutoring in my opinion is to help them gain confidence & enjoyment in the subject. If a student believes they are bad at a subject, they often won't try as hard because they view it as pointless. Confirmation bias can also lead to only noticing when they make mistakes, meaning they won't recognise the…

The most important thing would be to push them to be passionate and to be interested in what they are doing, and to help them want to improve at what they're learning. I find myself to be very relatable to students, likely due to my age, and able to convey information in a way that makes it easy to understand for a younger…

Instill a passion to learn the subject the tutor is helping out with and just generally help make the student feel competent when dealing with the subject. I believe taking the time with each individual student and connecting with them on a personal level is the most important thing as each student is going through different experiences and difficulties. Many tutors can simply explain content and answer questions, but I believe a great tutor inspires a passion for the field of study in the student. While supporting students to achieve their best grades is important to me, the best feeling as a tutor is seeing students who previously struggled and didn't enjoy a subject find things about it that…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is believe in them and their abilities. When a student can see that someone truly believes in them, they can start to believe in themselves too. Easy to book. Tutor at first glance was quite young but, very sensitive to the needs of my teen and after three weeks is already more confident. Very professional service from both the tutor and head office. Highly recommended!

Inside MaidstoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ruby focused on trigonometry in right-angled triangles and practiced applying Pythagoras' theorem to worded problems.

In Year 10, Adam tackled expanding and factorising quadratics, reinforcing his understanding by working through algebraic examples step-by-step.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Sam reviewed the difference between perimeter and area using measurement tasks and deepened skills with fractions, including finding lowest common multiples and adding unlike denominators.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student tackling trigonometry sometimes swapped formulas or forgot which process to use, leading to confusion during practice tests—"he forgets the formula or what to do and requires me to rejog."

In Year 9 algebra, one student hesitated to write out steps, thinking in her head instead; this made it hard for her to remember content and led to lost marks when checking answers.

A Year 8 student gave up quickly on harder problems, asking for hints rather than reviewing earlier examples.

When homework was missed in Year 7 maths, gaps appeared with reverse operations, slowing progress in class.

Recent Achievements

One Maidstone tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to get stuck on vector problems; now he confidently explains each step and applies methods across different questions.

Another high schooler recently sat a 45-minute test without distraction—she concentrated the whole time, then debated her answers during review instead of second-guessing herself like before.

A younger student has started using her fingers to work through tricky multiplication and division tasks, showing new independence where she once hesitated to try alone.

Last week, one girl finished all her homework on time and even picked up a new formula by herself without being prompted.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maribyrnong Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Footscray North Primary School.
