A tutor must be patient and understanding. Every child has their own way of learning. Therefore, a tutor must distinguish the students way of absorbing techniques and information, and implement these strategies for further sessions. A tutor must be able to relate to their students. More often than not a student may not understand a task first…

I think simply put a tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. It might take a different approach than they initially thought of but my job is to show them these different approaches. I am aware that it is sometimes extremely difficult to understand information when it is presented in only one…

First and Foremost, teaching every topic, every concept as clearly as possible and ensuring that the student has actually understood it. A tutor should also ensure that he is giving the student his full and complete attention during a class. I can explain topics very easily and precisely. A tutor’s most important role is to help a student truly understand the concepts rather than just memorising answers. I think it’s also important to create an environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions without worrying about being wrong. When students feel supported and the material is explained clearly, it becomes much…

School can be challenging, especially when much of the learning comes from textbooks, lectures, and independent reading. As a tutor, I believe it's important to provide personalized support that complements their day-to-day schooling. A tutor's role goes beyond simply reviewing content. We help bridge the gap between what is taught in class and…

It’s all about creating a comfortable space where they can ask questions, tailoring the approach to fit their needs, and giving them the tools to solve problems on their own. I think tutoring is about confidence just as much as academic ability and performance. I believe a good tutor not only teaches the content and helps the student to learn, but also encourages them to feel confident in themselves and their work, and motivated to do their best. I believe the secret to academic success is confidence, especially…

I believe that teaching students a syllabus and helping them achieve their grades is only part of a tutor's job. The most important aspect of a tutor is the ability to pass down a study discipline to their students. Good grades can help a student for a year, but good discipline will help a student their entire life. When I am teaching, not only…

One of the most important things a tutor can do, other than assisting them to excel in all areas of learning is to instil them with the confidence to learn. This is crucial as it allows students to believe that school work/learning is to be something that is fun rather than a “chore†or boring. Once this occurs, the student begins to engage…

Inside MalabarTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Lucas worked through multiplication and division of fractions as well as applying their understanding to perimeter and area in geometry using visual examples.

In Year 8, Sophie focused on solving inequalities and graphing them on number lines, then expanded her skills by practicing shortcuts for multiplying fractions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James tackled trigonometry concepts alongside bivariate data analysis, with targeted exam prep questions to reinforce application and interpretation of results.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7, one student's written work was flagged as needing clearer setting out—"Setting out still needs work"—making it harder to catch errors in multi-step maths.

For a Year 10 English task, last-minute communication meant the tutor only learned about an assessment deadline on the day it was due; as noted, "Student has unfortunately relayed information that their assessment was due that very day."

In senior maths (Year 12), anxiety and lack of confidence led to hesitancy in tackling new topics, which left the student feeling overwhelmed rather than progressing steadily through compound interest questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malabar noted that a Year 9 student, who previously hesitated to ask for clarification, is now openly seeking help when confused and has started correcting mistakes independently after feedback.

In a recent high school session, one student showed new independence by recalling formulas from memory and successfully applying them to solve equations without prompts—last term, this same student struggled with remembering steps.

Meanwhile, a primary schooler who once rushed through mental maths tasks now takes time to set out work logically and checks each answer before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Matraville Sports High School.
