As a tutor, I encourage my students to truly understand the course material, rather than aimlessly memorize the content. To do this it is important to be supportive, but firm. Ultimately, I want to help my students recognize the potential within themselves. I graduated in 2019 with an ATAR of 99.00. I have tutored 14 students over 3 years. I am…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do to a student is to make them motivated to learn the subject, whether that be from the passion of the tutor or from the interest that they develop for that subject over time. I am really good at explaining concepts and simplifying them in a way that the students could understand them. I was…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be understanding. Knowing how to teach a topic does not do much if a student is unwilling to learn, being understanding allows for a closer connection between a tutor and student and makes learning significantly easier. I believe that my strengths are my compassion and patience. This then…

To be an effective tutor, creating a positive learning environment and building connection with the student is crucial. Tutors should be adaptable and tailor their approach to the student's learning style. Constructive feedback is necessary to help students stay motivated and progress toward their goals. I think having a good personality is the most important thing as a tutor. This is because an educator is supposed to be patient, calm and helpful in front of his/her students. If he/she can't do that, he/she will always be in arguments with the students and thus mutual trusts between them will be lost. I think I have a good academic backgrounds…

A tutor needs to provide support and consideration of a student's abilities, and empower the student to achieve beyond what they think they can achieve. In particular, for younger students, I believe that tutors can and will help to lay the foundational stones that will provide the driving force to empower students to their best. Even if a…

This means identifying gaps in knowledge, explaining ideas clearly, encouraging good study habits, and helping students develop the independence to solve problems on their own. My strengths are patience and adapting my teaching style to each student’s needs. I break complex topics into…

Give them tools to increase their confidence! A tutor is there as a support system; they're there to provide the one-on-one attention a classroom teacher is unable to provide, and to clarify, reinforce, and adapt classroom teaching so that students get the most out of their learning. That's what helps them to meet their goals and find success. My…

Since it is mostly 1-on-1, tutoring allows for more detailed instructions and explanations, and I think this does wonders for students who couldn't quite catch up in a classroom environment. Clarifying misunderstanding, further explaining a formula, providing tricks and tips, and cementing the basics are all extremely important in helping a…

In my opinion, the most valuable thing a tutor can do for a student is help them improve in their subject by a margin that satisfies them. I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
