A tutor should help students develop both understanding and confidence. This means identifying gaps in their knowledge, explaining concepts in a way that suits their learning style, and encouraging them to think independently rather than relying on answers. Building a positive relationship, setting achievable goals, and providing consistent…

Make sure the student has the right attitude towards studying and enjoying as well. I personally think enjoying what you are doing is the most important. From my experience, It is way easier to learn and memorize the things you like. Forcing the student to do something worsens the attitude and possibly the grade as well. I think my biggest…

A tutor can guide a student to succeed. Not only in studies, but life in general. If tutors can make students aware of certain things which changes how they operate and that is the greatest thing a tutor can do. I am very patient and understanding. I try to listen to them and change my strategy. Understanding their needs makes me efficient to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to ignite their passion for learning itself, to change their perspective from the difficulty of problems to the joy of problem-solving. I am confident and find clever ways to help students through problems. Often approaching questions from different perspectives to help the student best…

I believe creating a comfortable environment for the student to thrive in, and being able to adapt to different students learning styles are among the most important things a tutor can do. Alongside this, a tutor should be able to explain topics in an interesting, yet simple way, whilst simultaneously pushing the students knowledge. I am able to…

It is so important for tutors to adapt their method of teaching to the way the student learns. Every student not only has different needs and difficulties, but learns concepts differently. It is extremely important to regularly re-evaluate the student's objectives. Modifying your approach as a tutor to make the student feel comfortable and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to build both understanding and confidence in a student. While improving academic performance is important, students learn best when they feel supported and capable. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is definitely taking initiative in everything they do. An outstanding tutor should be able take charge and seize the initiative; being a role model, for example, if a student has an exam coming up, a tutor should take the initiative to provide extra sessions; being able to put their best foot…

The most important thing a tutor can do is recognise their students ability level and mould their teaching to that level. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to always encourage them that they have the ability to achieve more than they think. I think that the most important things that a tutor can do for a student would be to inspire them to love the subjects that they take and study, to be able to inspire them to do their work and really work at it in their own time, such that the tutoring isn't a dependency but a supplement to their success. Once that's achieved, it becomes much…

Inside MarsfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lea focused on algebraic techniques, working through expansion and factorisation questions, as well as discussing accuracy and limits of accuracy using examples from homework.

In Year 10, Jack tackled trigonometric identities and proof-based questions to strengthen understanding ahead of assessments.

For Year 11, Sienna concentrated on solving combinations and permutations problems by breaking down multi-step scenarios, ensuring she could apply these skills to new contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, one student "didn't do homework," which meant new methods in inequalities were not reinforced outside of lessons—gaps showed up when tackling unfamiliar problems.

In Year 10 trigonometry, a reluctance to ask questions led to guessing answers instead of clarifying confusion; as noted, "she needs to be more active in asking questions."

Meanwhile, a senior student repeatedly avoided writing calculation steps in vector proofs, leading to sign errors and lost marks.

Another struggled with exam integration tasks due to careless corrections, erasing rather than confronting mistakes—a habit that cost marks under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Marsfield tutor noted that a Year 11 student recently moved from completing almost all homework correctly, showing she now checks her understanding and attempts problems even when unsure.

In a senior session, another high school student improved her correction rate on HSC-style papers—she now revisits mistakes independently and answers more quickly than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who previously hesitated to share ideas is now volunteering her thinking aloud during lessons, making visible steps toward greater classroom participation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Epping Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anthony's Catholic Primary School.
