I think a lot of the more important parts of tutoring is involved in the study technique and supporting students to find the motivation in themselves to study and do the work. Being the person that has got their back. Although of course the specific content they are learning is important as well. In addition a lot of students struggle with…

One of the important things, is inculcating love for learning. This includes addressing a student’s doubts while encouraging them to ask more, without making them feel embarrassed or self-conscious. Additionally, making real-life connections to certain topics while tutoring helps the student value its relevance in day-to-day life. As a tutor, I…

According to me, an english tutor must collaborate with his students to set realistic goals for them in the short as well as long term. Apart from that, a tutor should definitely empower students with effective study methods, time management strategies, and organizational techniques as it encourages them to develop independence in their learning…

I believe a great tutor goes beyond just increasing a student's marks- they are able to act as a mentor and oversee a student's education holistically. For example, I also guided one of my previous students through his year 12 year, helping him with the university admissions process and scholarship applications, where he is now studying…

A tutor can help create a safe environment for a child to voice their concerns with learning which they may feel unable to do in a class setting. Having one-on-one tutor sessions can also help a child to target exactly what they are struggling with. A tutor also has more time with that student to assess what they are good at in order to keep…

Inside Mayfield NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tyler worked through decimals (including addition, subtraction, and multiplication), rounding numbers, and adding and subtracting fractions as he prepared for his maths grading exam.

In Year 11, Erika focused on bearings and trigonometry applications in maths before shifting to biology topics such as the anatomy of the reproductive system and hormonal roles in the menstrual cycle.

Meanwhile, Chloe in Year 8 practised interpreting data using mean, median, mode, range, and creating various graphs like line and stem-and-leaf charts—sometimes applying these skills to real-world science scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, one student's workbook was "a little more organised and tidy" than before, but still required improvement; messy layout made it harder to review decimal multiplication and long division attempts.

For a senior student in Year 12 General Maths, incomplete homework and limited weekly study ("approx. 1 hour") meant key topics like financial maths and annuities weren't reinforced outside lessons—this led to confusion when tackling practice exams under time pressure.

Another senior learner missed parts of assigned revision due to difficulty focusing independently between sessions, resulting in persistent gaps when interpreting non-standard trigonometry questions.

Recent Achievements

During a Mayfield North tutoring session, Jackson, a senior high school student, moved from needing frequent hints on complex network problems to confidently tackling band 5–6 questions with minimal help.

Erika, also in high school, showed a notable shift—she now asks targeted questions during biology lessons and clearly articulates the difference between point mutations and chromosomal mutations after previously hesitating to discuss mutation types at all.

Meanwhile, Chloe (Year 8) recently completed her science assessment entirely independently for the first time this term, having struggled before to organise written responses without support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mayfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hunter Christian School.
