The biggest thing would be to help students understand that ignorance is not failure. Just because they don't know something "basic", that does not mean they are worse than others, or are stupider, or are not going to succeed. It simply means they were not taught in a way that makes sense to them. This could be for a number of reasons, and not…

According to me, an english tutor must collaborate with his students to set realistic goals for them in the short as well as long term. Apart from that, a tutor should definitely empower students with effective study methods, time management strategies, and organizational techniques as it encourages them to develop independence in their learning…

I think the most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to support a student to become an independent learner. By doing this, it means a student is able to use problem-solving techniques in their study and in the classroom, rather than just encouraging rote learning. Both daughters were very happy with Emily's tutoring
Ian, Callaghan

Inside SandgateTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Emily focused on solving simultaneous equations and explored how rates and ratios are applied in worded problems.

In Year 10, Jacob worked through coordinate geometry by finding gradients and x/y intercepts of lines, then practiced applying the sine rule for non-right angled triangles.

For Year 12, Sarah reviewed normal distribution concepts such as z-scores and the 68-95-99.7 rule, and also tackled critical path analysis by constructing network diagrams from activity charts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student struggled with test performance due to exam stress, overcomplicating problems despite knowing the material—"she was disappointed with her 48% even though she knew all the content well."

In Year 9, another student's working out for probability questions was hard to follow, making it difficult for markers to see their reasoning.

Homework completion has been inconsistent; a Year 5 learner admitted not doing last week's homework and missed valuable practice on place value.

A Year 8 student repeatedly mixed up steps in algebraic rearrangement, leading to repeated corrections during the lesson instead of progressing.

Recent Achievements

One Sandgate tutor recently saw a Year 10 student move from relying on tree diagrams to confidently working out probability problems in her head—a big leap in independence since last term.

A senior student who previously struggled with rates and ratios now completes related questions without hesitation, having turned this former stumbling block into a strength.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to get confused by mixed fractions quickly grasped the conversion steps after using diagrams for visual support, and wrapped up the lesson by converting between mixed and improper fractions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mayfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Awabakal Environmental Education Centre.
