The most important thing a tutor can do is create a good bond with the children and create confidence in allowing them to voice themselves. This voice allows them to carrying their convictions through school and be confident in his or her abilities. I feel I am relaxed with the children however stern when work is to be done. My relaxed nature…

A tutor can significantly influence the students in their future career. He/She must be able to develop a love for the subject in the students which I consider is very important. A good tutor has to be an excellent facilitator rather than a spoon feeder in the subject. This makes the students self-capable to achieve greater things in their life.…

I believe being able to provide a dependable and welcoming support system for a student is one of the most important things a tutor should do. Based on personal experience, I struggled with finding and being willing to approach teachers at school for help and support with studies. However, it was because I was able to turn to my tutors, who I…

The most important role of a tutor is to transform a student’s mindset. Beyond teaching content, I aim to impart a genuine passion for the subject and build the self-belief that they are capable of mastering it. When a student stops saying 'I can't do this' and starts asking 'How do I solve this?', that is real success. As an Engineering Masters…

A tutor can intiate the interest in studies in the student and get him/her out of the virtual box of fear that a certain subject is difficult to master. According to me two most important principles in a tutor are patience and trust. Building trust makes the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, make mistakes. Having patience also goes a long way in building that trust, so that the student can actually enjoy the learning process. I believe I can bring value to the role through my…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is awaken curiosity and interest in the student. Apart from only teaching the textbook content, I like to counsel them as to the importance of education and how its going to help them in the future by encouraging them to do better. Tutors need to give the students a short break of about 5-10 mins in between so that they don't get over worked, as the situation demands. Both of this helps the…

Inside Mays HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Adnan practised multiplication skills and explored area and perimeter, using worksheets to reinforce understanding.

In Year 10, Yasna worked on data analysis topics such as histograms and cumulative frequency polygons, with an emphasis on interpreting Pareto principles.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Farhan focused on financial mathematics concepts including calculating simple interest and applying percentage increases in practical scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student repeatedly arrived without a notebook or key materials for Algebra homework—"still doesn't have a notebook and needs to get one before next class." This led to incomplete work and confusion during lessons.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student did not finish an assigned assessment in Data Analysis; as noted, "need to finish the assessment," which delayed targeted feedback on exam strategies.

In Year 5 writing tasks, messy written sentences made it difficult to identify missing adjectives or punctuation errors until prompted.

These patterns slowed progress and made independent study more challenging between sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Mays Hill tutor noticed a real shift with a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask questions—this week, she openly requested extra practice on percentage cumulative frequency for Pareto charts and solved problems independently.

In another session, a high schooler working through Financial Mathematics was able to break down wage structures and commission calculations without prompting, after struggling with multi-step equations last month.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to rush her spelling is now deliberately sounding out tricky words before writing them, which helped her self-correct nearly all mistakes in her recent quiz.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wentworthville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Parramatta West Public School.
