Understanding that no 2 students are the same. Every student is very different and has different methods of learning. Through questioning and perhaps trial and error, it's important for the tutor to decipher what method works best for the student, what the students' weaknesses and strengths are, and use such information to create a tailored…

I believe having a tutor who presents work in a manageable and stepwise manner is key. many students are embarrassed to admit when they don't understand concepts they may think are simple, or are intimidated by the seeming difficulty of some of the work. Presenting the problems as manageable and breaking them down helps the student gain your trust…

A tutor is someone that helps students with their academic studies so that they get a better understanding of the subject .So for example, for biology subject ,a tutor needs to explain the concept rather then helping them reciting the subject without understanding. When students grasp the concept of the subject ,they are less likely to forget it…

I believe one of the most important things for a tutor is to give unlimited support to their students, answering their questions properly and patiently both in and out of class. what's more, a tutor should design their class for students and always get well-prepared. Except from these, a good tutor is also expect to be easily approachable and…

In my opinion, a good tutor is one who aims to get to know the student personally in order to use the best approach towards understanding difficult topics and concepts. It’s also important to provide encouragement and support, as well as understand that students might get frustrated or discouraged if they are unable to easily grasp a concept. I…

The most important thing is understanding the student. Every student has vastly different needs and requirements. Understanding those to make a friendly relationship with the student is of utmost importance, as without that, the tutoring will never be successful. Be able to understand that not every student is the same. Everyone's unique and their learning styles are different, so approaching every student with the same method to teach is not a good idea. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help a student gain the confidence and obtain the building blocks needed to not need a tutor as much in the future. Obviously, the priority is to first be able to learn what they are having trouble with initially, but the overall goal is to help them learn how to learn by…

I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

Always be as clear with them as possible, and be ready for whatever questions they might have for you. Remember to always be challenging the student, but only a little bit at a time so they don't feel overwhelmed. Also important is to make sure they celebrate when they make progress so that they don't have to wait until their next test or exam…

Clare is comfortable with Daniel already and has had at least a boost in confidence with having him "on her team".
Bridget, McKinnon

Inside McKinnonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on recognising and naming shapes, as well as exploring equivalent fractions using visual aids.

In Year 9, Ruby focused on solving equations with one unknown and practiced operations with fractions and ratios to build confidence.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Chloe reviewed the use of trigonometric ratios for right-angled triangles and applied bearings in geometry questions, often working through real-world navigation examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student arrived unprepared—no homework or maths books—leaving the session unfocused and limiting review of subtraction and times tables. As a tutor noted, "he was under prepared for me to be there and once again had no homework or schoolbooks with him for either of us to review."

In Year 8 algebra sessions, another student's written work was often messy and lacked clear working steps; negative signs were missed during factorising quadratics, which led to repeated calculation errors.

During a Year 11 trigonometry lesson, heavy reliance on notes made it difficult to independently apply bearings concepts when challenged with practice questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mckinnon recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples now able to solve trigonometric equations independently and draw the corresponding graphs without prompting, even choosing the right method for minimum or maximum points independently.

Another high schooler, previously hesitant to use calculators in class, successfully applied Pythagoras's theorem unaided and calculated trigonometric values while working through problems on circular functions.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student who often guessed at shapes is now confidently naming them and identifying fractions once they're explained, finishing a worksheet with no errors this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bentleigh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ormond Primary School.
