Building the student's confidence and knowledge are the two key aspects of being a tutor that I have found during my experience. Nothing is more important than a student feeling they can combat the work which is put in front of them. I can be flexible and work with the strengths and weaknesses of my students. I am extremely organised which allows…

Apart from many things, confidence to then be able to take back into the classroom, and real world. A tutor usually has a much smaller class to handle, so can develop greater relations with the students and clearly understand what each student needs to excel. My clear articulation, enunciation of words are a huge part. I also believe I am very…

Build a safe and friendly environment with the student as if someone perceives their tutor in a negative way they won’t want to learn. Making sure that the students are happy and understand everything i try and teach is the product of this environment. I am patient and will not give up to make sure that the student understands the topic as…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student to lift them up what they feel mostly interested while learning anything. To motivate them while they do something new and bring any new idea to resolve any problem. That will help to develop the psychology of a student in more positive way to move forward with their willingness of thinking…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is just be patient with them. As students are brought up in a competitive environment in school, most times they feel inferior to their peers as not everyone learns at the same pace. Some learn faster and some learn slower and most often students feel lost and pressured. As a tutor, being there for…

Give the student hope that they are able to do achieve something. I am that person where if u promise someone something that you know won't be achieved will damage that students confidence more than saying 'I can't promise anything, but I will try my absolute hardest to get you to your destination'. By giving students hope, and belief that they…

If you can make your students shine and bring their own strengths to the forefront, you've won. You have to believe in them before they believe in themselves and if you're in tune with your student and can bring out all their hidden gems, there's nothing that could compare. I think I'm pretty engaging and just enjoy expressing myself. If I'm…

The most important thing that a tutor can present is the additional support and knowledge beyond what students learn in school. The tutor's presence serves to be a reference point for the students and their goal is to nurture and nourish the student academically. Students should be able to clear any confusions and express their queries without…

To help the student feel more confident about approaching the subject they are learning - in my case, I love the feeling of getting across to a student who isn't particularly interested in English, and seeing points register on their faces. Tutors need to be understanding, patient, but also firm in their encouragement for their students to do their best. This means being available for any questions they may have and to meet students halfway, as well as being organised and prepared with their lessons so that students may get the best assistance possible. Be available and help them develop transferable skills. In my opinion, there's no point handing them an A+ essay to study and learn phrases, but rather help them understand why each type of connection and phrase is important and adds value, so that they can build their own skills which can be used under pressure in exams and across all of their…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student recognise their own potential. Alongside teaching them, it is just as important to ensure they realise they are capable of figuring things out on their own too (of course with some support!). I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to use personalised strategies that suit the student's learning style so that they can benefit from their one-on-one lessons in a way that they don't have the opportunity to in the classroom. I also believe it is important for a tutor to understand both the strengths and…

Inside Meadow HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Caleb worked on calculating the circumference and perimeter of circles and sectors, as well as solving worded questions involving manual decimal multiplication and division.

A Year 8 student focused on algebraic fractions, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing expressions with variables in the denominators.

For Year 7, work included understanding univariate data by finding mean, median, mode, range, and creating box-and-whisker plots using real data sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly avoided writing out full algebraic working, as noted: "Doing too much in his head, needs to practice writing working out down instead." This led to confusion and hidden calculation errors during polynomial division.

In Year 7, formatting issues surfaced—messy written solutions made it difficult to revise or spot errors when checking geometry work.

A senior student often neglected consistent backchecking, with a tutor observing, "Lots of errors that arose from superficial backchecking and being distracted towards the end of the lesson," causing small arithmetic slips to persist into final answers.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Meadow Heights recently noticed a big shift with Oscar, a Year 9 student who used to freeze when stuck on maths problems—he now tries different approaches without prompting and talks through his thinking out loud.

In another session, Sedra (Year 10) independently recognised when to use the addition rule for probability after struggling previously, confidently translating worded problems into Venn diagrams.

Meanwhile, a primary student was able to complete most of her homework worksheet and showed clear understanding of BIDMAS after needing help before; she finished by explaining each step aloud as she worked.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Meadow Heights Primary School.
