From my perspective, tutor is play a crucial role in providing personalised guidance and support that empowers the student's learning journey. A good tutor should not only convey subject matter knowledge but also cultivate effective learning strategies and critical thinking skills. By tailoring their approach to the student's needs and fostering a…

Build their confidence as much as their knowledge. A lot of students who struggle aren't actually bad at the subject they've just convinced themselves they are. Fixing that mindset matters as much as getting the right answer. I'm good at breaking down complex problems step by step without overcomplicating it. I also don't make students feel stupid…

Most Important is student's individual evaluation. A proper Strength-weakness analysis followed by relevant corrective measures can bore right results. Further a Tutor can mentor the student both academically and emotionally to boost the morale. This can can instill confidence and help the student to think logically and inculcate creativity and…

The most important things a tutor can do are to instil confidence, inspire curiosity, and prioritise understanding over memorisation. My experience teaching coding has shown me the power of breaking down concepts into manageable steps and celebrating progress to motivate students. I emphasise working smart—helping students grasp the "why"…

I think a good tutor can make studies feel like a piece of cake rather than rocket science. I think as a tutor it is my job to foster critical thinking and problem solving skills, so that a student can develop independent ideas and eventually become confident in the subject. My greatest strength is my ability to differentiate instruction to meet…

I consider patience a very important quality for a tutor to have for a student, and this is because everyone has different thinking capabilites, so I think this is very important. Your greatest strength is that I can translate complex logic into clear, simple steps. I cut through the fluff to get to the core "why" of a concept with a disciplined…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make concepts clear, and encourage independent thinking. It’s not just about giving answers, but helping them understand the process so they feel capable of tackling problems on their own. So, creating a supportive environment where they feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be to care for them. I believe that when we care for the people around us, we would want the best for them. Hence, we would put in the extra effort to help them, to give them nothing less but the best. This not only apply to their studies, but also to their well-being. I believe that by…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them feel confident and comfortable. It means so much more when a student feels safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and keep trying. A great tutor /teacher doesn’t teach but they build trust, adapt to the student’s learning style, and help them believe in their own ability…

transformation and one-to-one correspondence transformation is about how the tutor transforms "content knowledge into forms that are pedagogically powerful and adaptive to students’ abilities." (Shulman, 1992). One to one correspondence is because tutoring is about catering the lesson to students' individual or groups' needs. The tutor should…

The most important thing a tutor can do would be to understand the students, their learning style, depth of understanding of the subject and thus tailoring the course to their needs. Inside MentoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting algebraic terms as well as multiplying and dividing them for fluency with basic algebra.

In Year 10, Mia worked through trigonometry concepts including bearings, applying these to real-world navigation problems using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh reviewed financial mathematics by practicing compound interest calculations and manipulating equations to solve for unknown values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for exams struggled to track which exercises were completed, as one tutor noted: "Ask your classroom teacher for a checklist of chapter exercises that need to be completed." This led to missed practice opportunities and patchy revision.

In Year 11 Methods, a focus on collecting formulae onto a bound reference was mentioned, but not all relevant formulas were gathered in time for the test.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's algebra work sometimes lacked neat step-by-step layout—errors crept in when working wasn't clearly set out, especially with fraction operations.

Recent Achievements

A Mentone tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating with trig applications, now independently labels diagrams and selects the correct ratio without prompting—she even tackled worded questions using SOH CAH TOA.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to mix up algebraic operations worked through expanding and simplifying expressions with only a quick demo, confidently collecting like terms on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner showed new initiative by explaining how she found the area of an irregular shape step-by-step instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kilbreda College.
