Every tutor works hard to make a student understand the value of education. One-on-one tutoring is a great way to inspire a student to do their best and reach their full potential. A tutor gets to know a student more than a teacher in a classroom setting. We personalise our teaching based on every student and boost their confidence if they are…

In fact, I grew up having a few tutors but found that they all lacked one thing - constant support. I feel a tutor should always make themselves available to assist their students outside of class hours. I also feel that tutors should never appear intimidating to their students. I am the lead altar server at my church, and all current younger…

A tutor can make or break a students fervour towards a subject. He can make a concept really easy for students to understand and make confident. A tutor can really make a student love a subject by his way of teaching. I have a good way to go with students and have strong hold of math concepts. I have uniquely ways to make people understand complex…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

A tutor must be adaptable and proactive. They must observe a student's progress and deduce what method they learn best and adjust their teaching accordingly. Each student is different and has different capacities of learning and a good teacher must identify them for each student and make the best out of their unique potential. I can teach the…

To be an effective tutor, creating a positive learning environment and building connection with the student is crucial. Tutors should be adaptable and tailor their approach to the student's learning style. Constructive feedback is necessary to help students stay motivated and progress toward their goals. Lastly, a tutor should practice patience,…

Give time to the student. Clear doubts if any in their mind. I believe in hierarchical learning of a concept. First let the students solve the easy to medium difficulty questions confidently and then go on to the tougher ones. By breaking the tougher questions into small easier parts, student can understand it better First and…

The most important thing is listening to a student and truly understanding their strengths and weaknesses. It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. That they understand the underlying concepts behind every problems they do. Even if they do not wish to pursue the field in the future, understanding the concepts will give them the confidence to approach all…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a safe and supportive environment for learning. It is vital, especially in year 12, for a tutor to unlock a student's full potential in a certain subject, in order to ensure that they perform confidently in their exams, fully knowing that they are doing the best that they can, and have utilized all the available resources. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence they need to sit an exam and believe that they have the skills required to answer the questions in front of them. A tutor needs to care about their student. Without a sense of trust between teacher and student, there exists no confidence in either party. Thus, what I deem THE most important factor in tutoring is to show compassion and understanding to a student; to show…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make the subject material engaging, fun and captivating. In my opinion, a student can only learn and develop if they choose to do so, regardless of the ability or experience of the tutor or student. Thus, by making the subject in question seem alive through enthusiasm and engagement, the student…

Inside MentoneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting algebraic terms as well as multiplying and dividing them for fluency with basic algebra.

In Year 10, Mia worked through trigonometry concepts including bearings, applying these to real-world navigation problems using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Josh reviewed financial mathematics by practicing compound interest calculations and manipulating equations to solve for unknown values.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student preparing for exams struggled to track which exercises were completed, as one tutor noted: "Ask your classroom teacher for a checklist of chapter exercises that need to be completed." This led to missed practice opportunities and patchy revision.

In Year 11 Methods, a focus on collecting formulae onto a bound reference was mentioned, but not all relevant formulas were gathered in time for the test.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's algebra work sometimes lacked neat step-by-step layout—errors crept in when working wasn't clearly set out, especially with fraction operations.

Recent Achievements

A Mentone tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after previously hesitating with trig applications, now independently labels diagrams and selects the correct ratio without prompting—she even tackled worded questions using SOH CAH TOA.

In another session, a Year 9 student who used to mix up algebraic operations worked through expanding and simplifying expressions with only a quick demo, confidently collecting like terms on her own.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner showed new initiative by explaining how she found the area of an irregular shape step-by-step instead of waiting for help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kingston Information & Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kilbreda College.
