I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, help them understand concepts clearly, and create a supportive learning environment. A tutor should not just give answers, but instead guide students through the thinking process so they can solve problems independently in the future. It is also…

Equally important is creating a supportive environment that relieves stress, builds confidence, and encourages critical thinking to help students overcome difficulties One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is…

A tutor should be a mentor. They are someone who can guide a student and give real advice. This means they are approachable in and beyond the classroom setting. Being interactive is another must. The student should be solving the problems simply with the tutor's guidance. Tutors must also encourage the student to feel comfortable asking questions…

Each student has a different learning style, so the most important thing for a tutor to do, in my opinion, is to accurately identify a child's learning style and adapt lesson structures and teaching methods to optimise a student's understanding of the content during each lesson. My strengths as a tutor would be my communication and patience. Clear…

I believe it is important that you help students on both an academic and personal level. Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each session is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, I’ll feel I’m making a real difference…

Students are often scared of certain subjects and avoid facing their problems. For a tutor to be successful at his/her job, they need to be able to help the child overcome those fears and enjoy the subject they were once afraid of. Tutoring can be very challenging sometimes. Inside Merrylands WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Marcus focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, as well as converting fractions to decimals using step-by-step examples.

Year 7 student Sarah practiced adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and revised chance concepts through real-world scenarios.

For Year 10, David worked on essay structure and building background knowledge about set texts by breaking down prompts and discussing planning techniques.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, a student hesitated to use formal language in essays and struggled with planning, resulting in "structure issues within the essay" as noted by a tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student tackling comprehension questions often rushed through texts without patience, leading to misinterpretation and missed details.

In Year 5 mathematics, another student avoided writing out working for multiplication algorithms—preferring mental calculation—which led to repeated mistakes that were hard to trace.

When spelling was assessed in Year 7, uncertainty around new words meant progress stalled until the "look, cover, write, check" method was actively used.

Recent Achievements

One Merrylands West tutor noticed a Year 10 student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now methodically checking each step in long division—showing much more patience than before.

Another high school student had been hesitant to ask for help with essay structure, but this session worked bit by bit through each section, openly discussing where she felt stuck and using feedback to clarify her ideas.

A younger student mastered both the 9x and 11x tables after earlier struggles and started confidently breaking down worded multiplication problems into smaller steps without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greystanes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cerdon College.
