Having patience and perseverance - the student isn't not understanding the content out of malice, the tutor just needs to figure out another way to teach them. I approach each student with an open mind, in order to curate a learning method best suited to their age and personality. Patience and creativity are two qualities that I pride myself on…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide him/her with a safe space and approachable attitude to ask any questions he/she might have. Furthermore, trying to ease the burden on a student by simplifying the concepts as much as possible is yet another important thing. Lastly, not trying to rush the concepts due to shortage…

The most vital thing that can be done is helping a student feel capable and confident. Grades and content matter, but confidence is what will help them with almost everything in their life as a human being. My goal is to create an environment where the student feels safe to make a mistake, and doesn't feel pressured to get the concept within the…

The most important things will be assisting them to keep up with the school schedule and solving problems they want to know. A tutor should also guide students by giving them study advice and tips, boosting their confidence in different subjects. My strength as a tutor is that I often give students the feeling of studying with a friend, which…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is get them to enjoy or at least engage more with a subject they may be struggling with. Proving new angles and fresh insight is one of the best ways to do that. I also think providing students with an internal motivation can be very helpful (getting them to engage with their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and make sure to keep the student motivated while being honest with him/her. A tutor should also be able to adapt to a student's personality and should have an array of teaching method for the different learning styles. I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create an environment in which the student can feel safe to question what is being discussed and openly communicate lack of understanding and vulnerability. A tutor should set a good example for the student by punctual, respectful and approachable. A tutor should help the student set clear goals and monitor their progress. Above all, a tutor needs to believe in the student's capacity for growth, self-discipline and excellence. I think that I am very structured. I try my best to relate to students and…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them feel capable and supported. Many students who seek tutoring already experience self-doubt or frustration because they feel behind their peers. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think and learn. This is far more valuable for future work and study than any one topic to be learnt. My maths teacher always said that giving students 'a spark in their chest to learn' was the most valuable thing that a teacher could give to students. I absolutely agree. Inside MiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Sam practised dividing decimals and fractions, then solved word problems that mixed fractions with decimals.

For Year 8, Zoe explored stem-and-leaf plots alongside calculating mean, median, mode, and range using real data sets.

In Year 10, Daniel worked through compound interest scenarios and revised inflation and depreciation calculations in preparation for his upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

One Year 9 student struggled with bringing their maths books from school, which meant valuable lesson time was lost tracking down past examples and missed homework.

In Year 11, a lack of exam back-checking and rushed time management led to "tiny mistakes in answers" that cost marks and left questions unfinished.

A Year 7 learner's written solutions for problem-solving tasks were sometimes hard to follow; as noted, "layout could be better," making it tough to spot where errors occurred.

Confidence dips after setbacks were also seen in senior grades—one student hesitated to ask clarifying questions during algebra practice, slowing progress.

Recent Achievements

One Milton tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate during problem-solving now confidently alerts the tutor about assignment issues before lessons, so they can tackle challenges together right from the start.

In a recent session with a Year 12 student, she independently revised her finance topics—especially compound interest and annuities—and completed all related questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled with times tables last term is now consistently adding and subtracting large numbers on her own and recalling multiplication facts up to five. Last week, she finished every question unaided in her worksheet.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West End Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hubbard's School.
