Be prepared for a lesson, be interested, explain things properly and clearly, make sure they actually understand and aren't just saying 'yes', allowing them to work through some tasks themselves. I think I am good at explaining and communicating. I am also quite down to earth, so I think that it is easy to ask me any questions.…

Spark interest in a subject, inspire towards autonomous thinking, provide guidance in self education, provide opportunity for close communication during study and practice teamwork. I design lessons to fit every student's needs. Depending on a student's background and goals the material and the teaching style needs to be tailored. I think I'm good…

I believe one of the most vital things that tutors can do is alter their teaching type based on different students' abilities and progression over time. I think this helps differentiate tutoring from normal schooling as normal schooling is generalised for all students and doesn't cater for individual students' strengths and weaknesses. I believe…

To individualise teachings tailored to the needs of a given student. It is important to accomodate to the strengths and weaknesses of each student, and consequently plan a learning regime in accordance. Likewise, it is imperative that a tutor has deep understanding of the topic at hand such that I am able to provide profound logical and weighted…

Listening. I think the best thing a tutor/mentor can do is listen to their students to find out which subjects/areas that need to be focused on. Anyone can teach the syllabus but a great tutor will produce a study plan suited to each individual student which will help bring best out of them. studying at RMIT has helped further broaden my Math and…

make sure the tutors are patient and goes on a pace that is comfortable for the student. the most important thing to consider as a tutor is that each student is different and has their own way of learning, and its our job to understand and match their skillset, not the other way around. Resilience after drawbacks. A good tutor should not only provide one or two solutions limited to a single issue, but also help students establish confidence and motivation, and achieve their goals through dedicated efforts. Being able to explain contents in various ways and relate concepts to tangible life experiences; being able to put myself on…

As a tutor, you can\'t approach each student as if they are the same person learning the same subject. Each individual has different weaknesses and strengths. For a tutor to recognise this fact is detrimental to ensuring the tutor can target each student\'s weaknesses effectively instead of wasting time. Having been a student myself, I know time…

Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

The most important thing a tutor could do is to understand the student they are teaching. Not all students are the same and their needs aren't either. In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

Inside Mont AlbertTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student James focused on Statistics, Networks and Matrices, working through practical problems to consolidate understanding.

Year 7 student Aston tackled algebraic equations involving fractions and worked on simplifying values across different numerators, often using colour coding and textbook resources for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Sophie practised converting between whole numbers and improper fractions and completed worksheet exercises to strengthen her foundational maths skills.

Recent Challenges

Homework is left until the last minute which creates a bottleneck during tuition. A Year 9 student repeatedly left homework incomplete, with work often delayed until just before lessons. This habit meant less time for feedback and review in class.

In Year 11 English, there was difficulty integrating teacher feedback into new writing tasks—old errors crept back because earlier corrections weren't actively referenced.

For a Year 5 student, inconsistent handwriting and missed spelling practice made it hard to track progress over weeks.

One senior student's tendency to rely on familiar online maths methods sometimes blocked adoption of more efficient approaches in class.

Recent Achievements

One Mont Albert tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after struggling with network concepts and statistics, was able to pinpoint exactly where he'd gone wrong in his test papers—he now talks through mistakes out loud instead of guessing.

Another high schooler has shifted from solving every question laboriously to spotting patterns and intuiting answers during multiple-choice practice; he actively suggests shortcuts, showing real independence.

In primary sessions, a Year 4 student who used to avoid homework is now tackling assignments early in the week and even identified all key points in worded maths problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Holy Redeemer School.
