I think having a good personality is the most important thing as a tutor. This is because an educator is supposed to be patient, calm and helpful in front of his/her students. If he/she can't do that, he/she will always be in arguments with the students and thus mutual trusts between them will be lost. I think I have a good academic backgrounds…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn in a way that maximises their potential. Everyone learns in a different way and I believe a tutor can find what is best for the individual. A tutor needs to be able to teach a student to be able to independently work through challenges. Whilst someone who has…

Guidance. Knowledge would be useless without proper action. It's also a tutor's duty to encourage application of said knowledge so that they can use their own academic achievement to improve their lives, and help the world a better place. I have 2 greatest strenghs that would be of use for my tutoriing career. Firstly, my super duper energetic…

The most important area that a tutor can provide a student is to make sure they are in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment. I believe this is the first step in helping those that are not too keen in school or homework. After providing a friendly setting, this would lay the foundation that would help enable the student to develop a…

In my opinion, the relationship beyond subject tutoring is the most important aspect of a tutor. A great tutor must have the ability to connect deeply with the students to give them personalised teaching methods and materials, which ultimately increase both efficiency and effectiveness in teaching. In order of doing so, a tutor must have a great…

I think so rather than just teaching them if a tutor can actually make hard concepts easier for other students by using their experience and actually make learning fun then it would be really helpful for a student. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

One of the most essential ingredients is chemistry. A good tutor will take the time to connect meaningfully with the student and their families. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence to be an independent learner. A tutor should do more than simply teach a subject for a student. A tutor is an individual that can encourage others to act at their best, this can be in the academic field but can extend to other aspects of life as well. A tutor's most important goal should always be understanding, and if possible, relating to the circumstances of each of their…

I think it is very important to ask the student if they’re still attentive and understanding after every while of teaching. This is because of the student have lost concentration, they will not be able to learn anything and the lesson will be effectively useless. Thus it is important to sometimes insert some humour or times to stretch to regain…

I think that as a tutor, it is important to not take the "one fits all" approach for lessons. Rather, it is important for tutors to be flexible, as the way in which students learn best varies widely. A good tutor can pick up on the learning style of their students, and subsequently adapt their lessons to ensure maximum growth and improvement. As a…

Throughout my academic life my teachers and tutors and their passion for learning has sparked my own. Inside Mont AlbertTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student James focused on Statistics, Networks and Matrices, working through practical problems to consolidate understanding.

Year 7 student Aston tackled algebraic equations involving fractions and worked on simplifying values across different numerators, often using colour coding and textbook resources for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Sophie practised converting between whole numbers and improper fractions and completed worksheet exercises to strengthen her foundational maths skills.

Recent Challenges

Homework is left until the last minute which creates a bottleneck during tuition. A Year 9 student repeatedly left homework incomplete, with work often delayed until just before lessons. This habit meant less time for feedback and review in class.

In Year 11 English, there was difficulty integrating teacher feedback into new writing tasks—old errors crept back because earlier corrections weren't actively referenced.

For a Year 5 student, inconsistent handwriting and missed spelling practice made it hard to track progress over weeks.

One senior student's tendency to rely on familiar online maths methods sometimes blocked adoption of more efficient approaches in class.

Recent Achievements

One Mont Albert tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after struggling with network concepts and statistics, was able to pinpoint exactly where he'd gone wrong in his test papers—he now talks through mistakes out loud instead of guessing.

Another high schooler has shifted from solving every question laboriously to spotting patterns and intuiting answers during multiple-choice practice; he actively suggests shortcuts, showing real independence.

In primary sessions, a Year 4 student who used to avoid homework is now tackling assignments early in the week and even identified all key points in worded maths problems without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Holy Redeemer School.
