I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. I believe that learning is an exponential process, so a small victory in a tutoring session can lead to enormous benefits in the student's future. I am passionate about enabling students to maximise their…

Based on my experience as a university student, I find tutors to be more approachable than professors and willing to offer assistance and guidance for any issues students may face. My favourite strength is my ability to easily communicate with younger people, regardless of their age. As an international student, I firmly believe that consistency,…

A tutor must be willing to work with and adapt for each student. It is critical to not treat tutoring as one-size-fits-all - indeed many students may be getting a tutor because standard learning methods aren't working for them. It is also essential that tutors create a safe learning space where students are free to ask questions and give opinions.…

The one-on-one nature of tutoring is significantly conducive to not only the comprehension of the content, but to the students interpersonal skills. Having a mentor will give the student an academic confidence to succeed in what ever path they may decide to take. I am good at explaining the course material to the students level, with examples that…

As all students would have different levels of understanding, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take the time to devise individual learning plans for the students, plans which suit the individual's learning style and would be most effective in seeing them reach their full intellectual capacity. Punctuality and reliability are also…

Just supporting them through questions and providing hints allowing them to figure out the problem by themselves. Because the time spent is so limited homework is essential in order to consolidate the work done in class. Support comes in many different way such as being a role model and providing your own experiences so students are able to…

I believe that the two most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to help them gain a passion for their studies, and to teach them to apply their study skills to all of their subjects. I think that these two factors can really help students succeed with school and allow them to reach their full potential elsewhere in life. One of…

Be able to understand that not every student is the same. Everyone's unique and their learning styles are different, so approaching every student with the same method to teach is not a good idea. A tutor is someone that helps students with their academic studies so that they get a better understanding of the subject .So for example, for biology subject ,a tutor needs to explain the concept rather then helping them reciting the subject without understanding. When students grasp the concept of the subject ,they are less likely to forget it…

I believe one of the most important things for a tutor is to give unlimited support to their students, answering their questions properly and patiently both in and out of class. what's more, a tutor should design their class for students and always get well-prepared. I believe a tutor plays a crucial role in molding a student's academic journey, aside from their time spent at school. It is imperative to build a good working relationship with the student, which will aid the student in being comfortable and clarifying all doubts. This is important because I have met many students who are under the assumption…

At the end of the day, the role of tutoring is to help students foster independent thinking so they can overcome academic challenges on their own, because being self-sufficient is important. I think a tutor must be understanding and helpful. Finding innovative ways to teach and repeat the same concept. If the teacher teaches the student something and I as the tutor say the same thing, there is no understanding that would be gained. It is important to understand exactly what the student is not clear or sure about and clear those doubts…

Enhance students' confidence in their academic ability and empower them to achieve their dreams. Always be as clear with them as possible, and be ready for whatever questions they might have for you. I believe that a tutor must be flexible and patient, as all students' needs are different. They have to be persistent and encouraging, and make sure that any success is emphasised and also improved upon. The tutor should not only help the student to understand their coursework, but also help them to implement their own study plans and methods, so…

For me the most important aspect of being a tutor is that I must be able to maintain my students motivation. Somewhat like a personal trainer. Secondly a tutor must be able to explain concepts and ideas on the…

Deepti is working with my daughter for more than a year as her Tutor. The great strength of Deepti is the trust relationship that she develop with the students, so they feel comfortable to open up and get the guidelines she share and teach. My daughter was definitely improved her math, but more important improved her confident and approach to math.

Inside MoorabbinTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ruby focused on multiplying by 2s and 3s as well as tackling multi-step addition problems, including an introduction to doubling larger numbers.

For Year 9, Liam worked through linear equations and revisited square roots and cube roots, practising with expansion using the F.O.I.L. method.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student James tackled exponential and logarithm questions along with investigating data distributions in general mathematics, often reviewing homework questions together for consolidation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Science, a student's note-taking remained inconsistent—key points were often missed, making revision harder later. "He should from now on write down key areas of each lesson in a science book," one tutor observed.

In Year 11 Maths, test stress led to unfinished questions and errors under time pressure; the student struggled to highlight keywords or pace himself during assessments.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 English student avoided revisiting past feedback, so similar issues recurred in writing tasks.

Across several grades, homework was incomplete or attempted only briefly between sessions, limiting deeper practice and retention when new topics appeared.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Moorabbin recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who used to skip steps and feel stuck on algebra, now writes out each stage when expanding or factorising—he even tackled some problems in his head after practising FOIL.

Another high schooler showed a real shift by teaching back the substitution method for solving equations, something he'd previously struggled to remember without prompting.

Among younger students, one Year 4 girl went from guessing at multiplication to getting all her homework questions right with hardly any help and has started looking ahead at adding fractions on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moorabbin Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College.
