The most important thing a tutor can do for their students, is to be their friends. It helps providing the students an environment where they can enjoy what they are studying. It helps in eliminating rote learning, which kills the entire joy and purpose of learning and education. My great knowledge and interest in subjects like Math and Physics…

Being patient and understanding because if you dont show this trait as a tutor it will only make the student not want to learn or want a different tutor I am very patient and can see their struggle from different perspectives as someone who used to not get certain ideas or theories from the get go, therefore I am able to find different methods or…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create a safe and encouraging environment where a student feels comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence over time. I truly believe that is how you're able to learn. As my ex-manager used to say, "there's no such thing as a stupid question" and that really resonated…

As a tutor, I could assist students to understand their subjects by motivating them involving an interactive class with students. When I went to tutoring, I had the best experience by having a very motivated, interactive and interesting tutor. I will try to become one of them though I'm still yet to gain formal experience of tutoring In addition,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence and make learning feel approachable. When students feel supported and understood, they're far more likely to engage, ask questions, and take risks, which is where real growth happens! A great tutor doesn't just explain the content clearly; they also adapt to the…

A good tutor can boost the confidence of his/her student, can motivate the student to face problems by encouraging critical thinking. True learning happens when students build the tools to think for themselves. In my experience, the most vital role of a tutor is fostering self-efficacy through precise diagnostics and a supportive environment. Rather than just assisting with immediate coursework, I look past surface errors to pinpoint root learning gaps and adapt materials to how…

A tutor should realize that once upon a time, they themselves were a student who must have struggled with certain subjects and also fared well in certain other subjects. I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

Inside MortlakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on adding and subtracting fractions, then practiced multiplying and dividing both mixed and improper fractions using visual aids.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on expanding brackets in algebraic expressions and began factorising basic expressions for homework support.

For Year 11, Olivia reviewed the strategic role of financial management along with objectives of finance and explored the interdependence between finance and other business functions within her Commerce studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student often rushed to answers without showing step-by-step working, especially in algebra and inequalities—this made it hard to spot sign errors or missing pronumerals. "He tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working," a tutor noted, which led to small mistakes accumulating on assessments.

In senior economics, a Year 12 struggled with structuring business report evaluations and sometimes neglected reviewing class notes for macroeconomic concepts.

One Year 9 English student read quickly but overlooked grammatical errors and failed to organise ideas clearly in written responses, impacting both comprehension and expression.

Recent Achievements

One Mortlake tutor noticed real shifts across different year levels recently. In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to skip showing his working out, but now consistently sets it out for problems he can't do mentally, which has helped him catch errors before moving on.

In senior Business Studies, Kai moved from mostly descriptive writing to crafting more analytical paragraphs in his reports after targeted feedback—he now explains cause and effect instead of just listing facts.

Meanwhile, Zarraf (Year 6 English) went from hesitating to share ideas aloud to making thoughtful predictions about challenging texts and backing them up with details from the story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
