I believe that it is important for a tutor to be so much more than what a teacher is. This involves building close bonds with their students to understand their academic needs so that tutoring sessions can be tailored specifically to the student. It is also extremely important for the tutor to always have a positive attitude and encourage their…

Firstly, I believe that an Academic Tutor is an important job position which requires an individual to holistically support students to achieve their personal and academic goals. In addition, I believe that tutoring should take a personalised approach to teach students specific academic skills which will help them achieve their own developmental…

Be patient with the student when it comes to concepts they struggle with as well as adapting to their skills and ways of learning in order to optimize their efficiency and knowledge. Tutors should also be able to drill life skills into their students such as resilience in not giving up on a hard question. - adaptability in teaching style -…

The tutor should be reliable, and help them unleash their potential. Students should learn that they are able to do things on their own, hence a tutor should also be encouraging. I am able to relate to the students. I can mold my way of teaching into their liking, and I am prepared. I will think of all strategies to teach them…

I think one of the most improtant things is to be a good listener and have a good understanding with your student so that he/she can freely ask questions or share any problems they are facing. Being honest with the student also plays a very important role as they can know you cant alwyas be perfect and its okay to make mistakes! I can assess the…

I believe a tutor's role goes beyond helping students achieve good grades. A great tutor should create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, help them develop effective study habits and problem-solving skills, and build the confidence to learn independently. Ultimately, the goal is to equip students with skills…

Finding a love for the subject that they are learning, making them eager to learn rather than feeling forced. I think making students feel like they're being seen and heard is a really powerful thing, and to make clear that a tutor isn't just a fixed resource like a book or a video but someone you can interact with and learn from just from someone being there to guide you. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is provide a learning environment free from both the rigid structure and inherent judgement present in centres of mass education. A calmer, more personal environment allows the establishment of time tables and study plans more conducive to the individual student. There is also…

Patience and not comparing them with the others. I believe that each student has their own pace of learning. The most important thing is building understanding, not just getting to the right answer — a student should walk away knowing why something works, not just what to write down. Patience matters just as much: making sure a student never feels judged for not getting something straight away. And I think a good tutor builds confidence alongside…

Mara, Mosman

Inside MosmanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zara worked through volume and unit conversions, practising with real-world measurement examples.

In Year 9, Sam tackled expanding polynomials and reducing fractions step-by-step using practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia focused on analysing the function domain and range as well as applying function notation to problem-solving exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, one student avoided answering addition questions that involved carrying numbers and chose only easier homework problems, as a tutor noted: "She completed long addition questions that did not need carrying."

In Year 7 Maths, another student repeatedly guessed answers and waited for feedback instead of showing his own working, leading to less independent problem-solving.

A Year 10 student left assigned pre-reading for an English play unfinished, which meant class time was spent explaining context rather than tackling questions.

When homework or in-class note-taking is skipped or incomplete, valuable practice and test preparation opportunities are lost.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mosman noted that one high school student, Lachy, has become much more proactive about his learning—he now arrives well prepared for English sessions and is able to answer most questions independently, a shift from previous lessons where he relied more on guidance.

Another older student, Ollie, recently completed over 90% of a mock maths test quickly and correctly after showing much sharper recall of both new and old concepts; previously, he struggled with formula recollection under pressure.

Meanwhile, in a younger session, Theo stopped guessing at spelling tasks and instead began checking for the "ty" ending in number words—a change from earlier lessons when he'd give up or guess randomly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mosman Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman High School.
