The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to show them that they have great potential, as well as leave them with invaluable lessons that they will call upon throughout the rest of their education journey. - I am young and I am a very social person, which means that building a rapport with young students comes very…

Personally, I believe that students come to tutors for a reason: commitment. Even though I am not an official school teacher, I try to make sure that students walk out of the tutoring session with a reasonable understanding of a particular topic, despite the fact that they might have learned about it at school already. I think it is necessary that…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for their students are to listen to them, understand their individual needs, and relentlessly support their learning journey. By actively listening, a tutor can identify where the student is struggling and how they best learn, which allows for a tailored approach that makes the material more…

Help them understand and not let them feel helpless. A lot of kids feel helpless when learning and it's extremely important for tutors to let them know that they aren't and teach them other ways to learn that are more helpful for them. My strengths are most definitely adapting to any situation and my patience. I understand that people may struggle…

As a tutor , I have opportunity 1 to 1 (or 1 to a small group ) to have two way communication with the student so that i can try to understand their own need and adjust my tutoring to fit their need I think years of study in math and engineering and year 1 level physics and chemistry would be a strength. While back to high school i had studied…

A tutor should know the student's learning style well and be able to cater to their needs. A tutor should also provide a strong foundation to the subjects so that students can build upon this foundation and practice and get better in the future. A tutor should also build good, consistent study habits in the student, and build up the student's…

To be able to identify the students strengths and weaknesses before coming up with a teaching method that is suitable to their most preferred way of learning and the way of learning that they would be able to benefit most from. Confidence. A great tutor doesn't just teach the subject, they help the student believe they can master it. That shift in mindset is what drives real progress. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is my ability to explain complex ideas in a simple, clear way. Because I'm studying mechanical engineering, I had to learn how to break down difficult…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be a good listener. I think the most important thing is patience as not all students are fast learner. Sometimes repetition is needed in tutoring and we need to stay calm and cool while explaining it repeatedly. Also, communication skills are essential. A good tutor knows how to deliver the subject so that it is easy to be understood by the student. 1. Patience 2.…

Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. Inside Mosman ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages as well as tackling percentage word problems using real-life scenarios.

In Year 9, Sophie focused on understanding circle theorems—solving problems involving tangents and alternate segment theorem, and practicing correct mathematical notation.

For Year 10, Marcus consolidated skills in sketching parabolas by completing the square and identifying key features from turning point form, also using discriminant rules for axis of symmetry.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student faced challenges with time management in tests, often leaving complex calculus questions unfinished; as one tutor observed, "he needed to plan which problems to tackle first but ran out of time."

In Year 8, another student's working was described as "messy and hard to follow," especially during algebra tasks—key steps were skipped on paper, making it tough to track errors.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner forgot to complete homework on subtraction with borrowing, so most of the lesson was spent revisiting old ground rather than building new skills. This slowed overall progress and left them feeling frustrated by the end.

Recent Achievements

One Mosman Park tutor saw a Year 11 student move from hesitating over critical points in functions to independently finding x- and y-intercepts and confidently identifying maxima and minima without prompting.

A Year 9 student who used to skip over tricky worded ratio problems now tries each question solo before asking for help, neatly setting out her solutions and catching her own errors.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, Jimmy has shifted from guessing during subtraction to actively voicing his doubts and using a checklist he created to avoid place value mistakes—he finished the session by solving all borrowing questions unaided for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman Park Primary School.
