First and foremost it would be building a strong rapport with the student and gaining mutual trust and respect. This builds a foundation of confidence and comfort which optimises a students ability to learn and their attitude towards learning. The most important thing that a tutor can do is understand their student’s weakness and strengths and work on them and use them respectively. The major role is guidance. Showing them that it is just not about passing exams and good grades but the knowledge and values remain with you until lifetime. Hence a tutor can be the one that guides a…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, explain concepts clearly, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. A good tutor should not simply give answers, but guide students to understand the method, recognise patterns and become more confident in approaching new questions. It is also…

1. Simplify and relate lessons to real life scenarios. 2. Tutors must have the ability to inspire the students and make them like the subject. 3. Along with the lessons tutors must build an authentic relationship with students. The more students become comfortable; it is easier for tutors to impart the concepts. 4. Tutor's must adapt to…

The important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel more confident about their abilities and knowledge. The more they can back them-self, the more they can be composed in a test environment, the better they perform in test conditions, the better their marks. I think a good tutor is beyond just a subject matter expert and can be conducive to the development of the student as a whole. I feel the concept of tutoring is very personal and that a tutor should make a student feel comfortable enough to encourage him/her to view the tutor as a confidante. Furthermore, there's the added advantage of being able…

Students often seek tutoring not just because they don't understand a subject, but because they lack confidence and love for learning that subject. I think that it's really important to be a good listener so that you can use feedback from students to improve your teaching. Not everyone learns in the same way so it's really important to work with each student to find the learning tehniques that work best for them. It's also important to recognise that each student could prefer different…

Inside Mount ClaremontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jack worked through fractions and percentages, using visual models to build confidence with calculations.

For Year 10, Emily focused on all types of quadratic equations, including factorising, completing the square, and graphing quadratics from word problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on exam revision by tackling practice questions involving linear functions and inequalities as well as a variety of trigonometry problems, especially those featuring bearings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 trigonometry, a tutor noted "he needs to learn how to apply the methods taught, not just use them," highlighting a reliance on formulas without connecting concepts—this left him uncertain in non-standard problems.

In Year 11, one student struggled with test planning: "James should also learn to only spend a mark a minute on questions in order to not spend too much time on one solution," leading to unfinished sections despite knowing the material.

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, incomplete written working and missing steps meant errors went unnoticed until revision, which delayed improvement and created frustration during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

In Mount Claremont, a high school student who used to get stuck on quadratic equations is now confidently converting them to turning point form and tackling tougher textbook problems without hesitation.

Another older student, who previously struggled with showing his working out, has started writing out each step clearly instead of trying to solve everything mentally—a change that's made a real difference in his test results.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once guessed at fraction questions now asks for help when unsure, leading her to correctly add and subtract fractions on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Claremont Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John XXIII College.
