As a tutor , I have opportunity 1 to 1 (or 1 to a small group ) to have two way communication with the student so that i can try to understand their own need and adjust my tutoring to fit their need I think years of study in math and engineering and year 1 level physics and chemistry would be a strength. While back to high school i had studied…

A tutor does not just teach a student a particular subject. I believe that the most important function of a tutor is to foster overall academic confidence in a student and to develop better study techniques/learning habits more generally. A good tutor can give a student motivation and techniques to achieve not only in the tutored subject, but in…

It is important to build a relationship with the student and to always guide them but not push them to their limits. It is also important that the student understands how its done, while having them memorise a pattern is easy, allowing them to understand how to solve these types of questions will allow them to apply their solution to more things.…

Furthermore, the tutor can equip the student with different strategies so they can work independently. I think it is more important to be able to communicate and connect with the students and find what they need to do to improve their scores. Then for myself finding different ways to get those skills across for them to be successful. My strengths as a tutor are connecting with the students and relating the material to what they understand most. I…

First and foremost it would be building a strong rapport with the student and gaining mutual trust and respect. This builds a foundation of confidence and comfort which optimises a students ability to learn and their attitude towards learning. Tutors should be adaptable and be able to target the teaching to each students unique way of learning. …

The most important thing that a tutor can do is understand their student’s weakness and strengths and work on them and use them respectively. The major role is guidance. Showing them that it is just not about passing exams and good grades but the knowledge and values remain with you until lifetime. Hence a tutor can be the one that guides a…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, explain concepts clearly, and help them develop independent problem-solving skills. Maintaining the cognitive load. When tutoring, a tutor needs to go slow and work first on the things that students are finding challenges. Providing resources to aid the student in their learning. All of this prevents a cognitive overload. Listening and showing respect. Tutoring is about understanding that someone is needing help and being there…

Inside Mount ClaremontTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jack worked through fractions and percentages, using visual models to build confidence with calculations.

For Year 10, Emily focused on all types of quadratic equations, including factorising, completing the square, and graphing quadratics from word problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on exam revision by tackling practice questions involving linear functions and inequalities as well as a variety of trigonometry problems, especially those featuring bearings.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 trigonometry, a tutor noted "he needs to learn how to apply the methods taught, not just use them," highlighting a reliance on formulas without connecting concepts—this left him uncertain in non-standard problems.

In Year 11, one student struggled with test planning: "James should also learn to only spend a mark a minute on questions in order to not spend too much time on one solution," leading to unfinished sections despite knowing the material.

Meanwhile, in Year 7 algebra, incomplete written working and missing steps meant errors went unnoticed until revision, which delayed improvement and created frustration during practice sessions.

Recent Achievements

In Mount Claremont, a high school student who used to get stuck on quadratic equations is now confidently converting them to turning point form and tackling tougher textbook problems without hesitation.

Another older student, who previously struggled with showing his working out, has started writing out each step clearly instead of trying to solve everything mentally—a change that's made a real difference in his test results.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once guessed at fraction questions now asks for help when unsure, leading her to correctly add and subtract fractions on her own this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mount Claremont Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John XXIII College.
